A transformation is reversible if and only if the total entropy does not change, that is ΔStot=0\Delta S_\text{tot} = 0. This condition is far more selective than the first law alone: imposing it on the sum ΔSgas+ΔSterm\Delta S_\text{gas} + \Delta S_\text{term} and adding, in turn, a different constraint (VV constant, PP constant, TT constant, or Q=0Q=0) isolates exactly four ideal processes. These are the only transformations that can be represented as well-defined curves in the PP-VV diagram, and the starting point for building heat engines.

Note

For a gas transformation to be reversible, the gas must remain infinitesimally close to equilibrium throughout the whole process. It is not enough for the initial and final states to be equilibrium states: every single intermediate instant must be too. This is a strict requirement, which splits into two distinct conditions that must be satisfied simultaneously.

The first is thermal equilibrium: the temperature of the gas must be equal — or differ by at most an infinitesimal amount — from that of the reservoirs with which it exchanges heat. If there were a finite temperature jump between the gas and the reservoir, heat would flow spontaneously from hot to cold and generate entropy, making the process irreversible.

The second is mechanical equilibrium: the pressure of the gas must be equal — or differ by an infinitesimal amount — from the external pressure acting on the piston. If the internal pressure were to exceed the external one by a finite amount, the gas would push the piston abruptly and uncontrollably, again producing entropy.

Note

A reversible transformation is always infinitely slow: at every instant the gas is in equilibrium. This is the price to pay so that not even a finite jump in temperature or pressure ever appears.

In depth — How this is achieved in practice

A reversible transformation is achieved in practice by using infinitely many reservoirs at progressively different temperatures, so that the gas moves from one temperature to the next always in contact with a reservoir almost identical to its own state. For pressure, imagine adding grains of sand one at a time onto the piston, changing its load so gradually that the gas is never pulled away from mechanical equilibrium. In reality, reversible processes are a useful idealisation: no real process is perfectly reversible, because every transformation that takes place in finite time generates a little entropy.

ΔSgas=nCvlnTBTA+nRlnVBVA\Delta S_\text{gas} = nC_v\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} + nR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A}

ΔSterm=QTterm\Delta S_\text{term} = \frac{Q}{T_\text{term}}

Formula chiave

ΔSgas=nCvlnTBTA+nRlnVBVAΔSterm=QTterm\Delta S_\text{gas} = nC_v\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} + nR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A} \qquad \Delta S_\text{term} = \frac{Q}{T_\text{term}}

ΔStot=ΔSgas+ΔSterm=0\Delta S_\text{tot} = \Delta S_\text{gas} + \Delta S_\text{term} = 0

The tool that allows the four reversible transformations to be derived from a single condition is the general formula for the entropy change of an ideal gas, already derived in the chapter on entropy. Going from a state AA to a state BB, the entropy change of the gas depends only on the end states, not on the path followed:

ΔSgas=nCvlnTBTA+nRlnVBVA\Delta S_\text{gas} = nC_v\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} + nR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A}

The first term measures the contribution of the temperature change, the second that of the volume change. Alongside this we must add the entropy change of every reservoir with which the gas exchanges an amount of heat QQ while remaining at constant temperature TtermT_\text{term}:

ΔSterm=QTterm\Delta S_\text{term} = \frac{Q}{T_\text{term}}

Key formula

ΔSgas=nCvlnTBTA+nRlnVBVAΔSterm=QTterm\Delta S_\text{gas} = nC_v\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} + nR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A} \qquad \Delta S_\text{term} = \frac{Q}{T_\text{term}}

The mechanism that generates the fundamental transformations is now purely algebraic. We impose that the entropy of the universe does not change,

ΔStot=ΔSgas+ΔSterm=0\Delta S_\text{tot} = \Delta S_\text{gas} + \Delta S_\text{term} = 0

and each time we add the specific constraint of the process under consideration: constant VV, or constant PP, or constant TT, or Q=0Q=0. Each choice closes the system and produces one of the four fundamental reversible transformations — isochoric, isobaric, isothermal and adiabatic. These are not four cases picked by hand, but the four faces of a single condition.

ΔSgas=nCvlnTBTA\Delta S_\text{gas} = nC_v\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A}

The reversible isochoric transformation is obtained by imposing the constraint of constant volume: VB=VAV_B = V_A. In practice the piston is locked, or the gas is enclosed in a rigid container. Since the volume does not change, the gas does not move any boundary and therefore does no work on the piston: Lgas=0L_\text{gas} = 0.

For the transformation to be reversible, however, the gas cannot be heated suddenly by contact with a single, much hotter reservoir: it must exchange heat with a continuous sequence of reservoirs, each at a slightly different temperature from the next, so as to remain in thermal equilibrium at every instant. All the absorbed heat then goes into increasing the internal energy of the gas, since none of it can be converted into work.

Applying the general entropy formula, the volume-related term vanishes because ln(VB/VA)=ln1=0\ln(V_B/V_A) = \ln 1 = 0, and only the thermal contribution remains:

ΔSgas=nCvlnTBTA\Delta S_\text{gas} = nC_v\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A}

The heat exchanged is what, at constant volume, changes the internal energy, i.e. Q=nCv(TBTA)Q = nC_v(T_B - T_A).

lnVBVA=lnTBTA\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A} = \ln\frac{T_B}{T_A}

ΔSgas=(nCv+nR)lnTBTA=nCplnTBTA\Delta S_\text{gas} = (nC_v + nR)\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} = nC_p\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A}

Principio — Isobara reversibile

PB=PALgas=P(VBVA)=nR(TBTA)Q=nCp(TBTA)ΔSgas=nCplnTBTA\begin{aligned} P_B &= P_A \\ L_\text{gas} &= P(V_B - V_A) = nR(T_B - T_A) \\ Q &= nC_p(T_B - T_A) \\ \Delta S_\text{gas} &= nC_p\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} \end{aligned}

The reversible isobaric transformation is the transformation at constant pressure: PB=PAP_B = P_A. The piston is free to move but the load resting on it does not change, so the pressure of the gas stays fixed at its value while volume and temperature vary together.

To derive the entropy change it is convenient to exploit the ideal gas law. At constant pressure the ratio between volume and temperature is fixed, VB/VA=TB/TAV_B/V_A = T_B/T_A, and so the two logarithms coincide:

lnVBVA=lnTBTA\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A} = \ln\frac{T_B}{T_A}

Substituting into the general formula, the two contributions — the one in CvC_v and the one in RR — add up within the same logarithm. Recalling that Cp=Cv+RC_p = C_v + R for an ideal gas:

ΔSgas=(nCv+nR)lnTBTA=nCplnTBTA\Delta S_\text{gas} = (nC_v + nR)\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} = nC_p\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A}

The work is that characteristic of a constant-pressure transformation: the force on the piston is constant and the gas multiplies it by the volume displacement, Lgas=P(VBVA)L_\text{gas} = P(V_B - V_A). Using the ideal gas law again, PΔV=nRΔTP\,\Delta V = nR\,\Delta T. The heat absorbed, at constant pressure, is governed by the heat capacity CpC_p: Q=nCp(TBTA)Q = nC_p(T_B - T_A).

Principle — Reversible isobaric transformation

PB=PALgas=P(VBVA)=nR(TBTA)Q=nCp(TBTA)ΔSgas=nCplnTBTA\begin{aligned} P_B &= P_A \\ L_\text{gas} &= P(V_B - V_A) = nR(T_B - T_A) \\ Q &= nC_p(T_B - T_A) \\ \Delta S_\text{gas} &= nC_p\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} \end{aligned}

The energy flow is nicely visualised with a bubble diagram: heat QQ enters the internal energy of the gas from the ambient reservoir, which in turn hands work LgasL_\text{gas} to the piston, which finally pushes away the atmosphere by doing work LatmL_\text{atm}.

Bubble diagram of a reversible isobaric transformation: heat QQ enters the internal energy of the gas from the reservoir, which in turn does work LgasL_\text{gas} on the piston, which in turn pushes away the atmosphere (LatmL_\text{atm}).

Warning — Lgas=PΔVL_\text{gas} = P\,\Delta V only holds if reversible

The formula Lgas=PgasΔVgasL_\text{gas} = P_\text{gas}\,\Delta V_\text{gas} requires the pressure of the gas to be the external pressure on the piston at every instant. This is true only in a reversible transformation. In a free expansion, for example, the gas exerts no pressure against anything (Pesterna=0P_\text{esterna} = 0) so Lgas=0L_\text{gas} = 0 even if ΔV>0\Delta V > 0.

Q=LgasQ = L_\text{gas}

ΔSgas=nRlnVBVA\Delta S_\text{gas} = nR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A}

nRlnVBVAQT=0    Q=nRTlnVBVAnR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A} - \frac{Q}{T} = 0 \;\Rightarrow\; Q = nRT\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A}

The reversible isotherm is the transformation at constant temperature: TB=TA=TT_B = T_A = T. The gas remains in contact with a single thermostat at temperature TT, and precisely because the temperature never varies the gas does not need to jump between different thermostats: a single heat bath is enough to maintain equilibrium.

Since for an ideal gas the internal energy depends only on temperature, at constant TT it does not change: ΔEint=0\Delta E_\text{int} = 0. The first law then reduces to a direct equality between the heat absorbed and the work done,

Q=LgasQ = L_\text{gas}

all the heat that enters is entirely converted into work, with no reserves stored in the gas.

The change in entropy of the gas follows from the general formula by cancelling out the temperature term, since ln(TB/TA)=0\ln(T_B/T_A) = 0:

ΔSgas=nRlnVBVA\Delta S_\text{gas} = nR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A}

The value of the heat is obtained by imposing reversibility. The entropy of the thermostat changes by ΔSterm=Q/T\Delta S_\text{term} = -Q/T (it loses the heat gained by the gas), and the condition ΔStot=0\Delta S_\text{tot} = 0 becomes:

nRlnVBVAQT=0    Q=nRTlnVBVAnR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A} - \frac{Q}{T} = 0 \;\Rightarrow\; Q = nRT\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A}

ΔSgas=nCvlnTBTA+nRlnVBVA=0\Delta S_\text{gas} = nC_v\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} + nR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A} = 0

Formula chiave

TVγ1=costPVγ=cost\ev{T\,V^{\gamma-1} = \text{cost} \qquad P\,V^\gamma = \text{cost}} dove γ=CpCv=f+2f\gamma = \dfrac{C_p}{C_v} = \dfrac{f+2}{f}.

ΔEint=Lgas=nCv(TBTA)\Delta E_\text{int} = -L_\text{gas} = nC_v(T_B - T_A)

Principio — Sintesi adiabatica reversibile

Nota storica

The reversible adiabat is the transformation with the constraint Q=0Q = 0: the gas has no thermal contact with the outside. Since there are no thermostats, there is no entropy exchanged with the environment either, ΔSterm=0\Delta S_\text{term} = 0, and the reversibility condition ΔStot=0\Delta S_\text{tot} = 0 falls entirely on the gas:

ΔSgas=nCvlnTBTA+nRlnVBVA=0\Delta S_\text{gas} = nC_v\,\ln\frac{T_B}{T_A} + nR\,\ln\frac{V_B}{V_A} = 0

This is no longer just a value to calculate: it is an equation linking temperature and volume throughout the whole process. Balancing the two terms and exponentiating, the combination TVR/CvT\,V^{\,R/C_v} must remain constant; introducing the adiabatic exponent γ=Cp/Cv\gamma = C_p/C_v the relation takes its celebrated form, which in PP-VV variables becomes PVγ=constP\,V^\gamma = \text{const}.

Key formula

TVγ1=constPVγ=const\ev{T\,V^{\gamma-1} = \text{const} \qquad P\,V^\gamma = \text{const}} where γ=CpCv=f+2f\gamma = \dfrac{C_p}{C_v} = \dfrac{f+2}{f}.

The coefficient γ\gamma depends only on the degrees of freedom ff of the molecule: for a monatomic gas f=3f=3 and γ=5/3\gamma = 5/3, for a diatomic gas f=5f=5 and γ=7/5\gamma = 7/5.

On the energy side, with Q=0Q = 0 the first law says that all the work done by the gas is drawn from its internal energy. An adiabatic expansion therefore cools the gas, while a compression heats it:

ΔEint=Lgas=nCv(TBTA)\Delta E_\text{int} = -L_\text{gas} = nC_v(T_B - T_A)

Principle — Summary of the reversible adiabat

Historical note

The formula PVγ=constP\,V^\gamma = \text{const} was first found by Siméon Poisson in 1823, even before the concept of entropy was clearly defined. Only decades later was it understood to be a direct consequence of the condition ΔSgas=0\Delta S_\text{gas} = 0.

The four reversible transformations all arise from the same condition ΔStot=0\Delta S_\text{tot} = 0, distinguished by the constraint imposed. The table collects, for each one, the characteristic constraint, the work done by the gas, the heat exchanged and the change in entropy of the gas: it is the reference scheme to keep in mind when solving a cycle made up of several segments.
