Just as the interaction diagram serves forces, the energy exchange diagram (or “bubble diagram”) serves energy: it’s the direct link between interactions and energy transformations. Each bubble is a type of energy, each arrow a transfer, the system boundary marks the total energy.

Just as the interaction diagram is used for forces, the energy-exchange diagram (or “bubble diagram”) is used for energy. It is the direct link between interactions and energy transformations: it shows at a glance which types of energy come into play, how they transform into one another, and whether the total energy of the system is conserved.
Principle — Rules for the energy-exchange diagram
- For each body, draw a bubble for each type of energy it possesses: , , , .
- Inside each bubble write two numbers: the value in state A (top) and the value in state B (bottom).
- Connect the bubbles with arrows showing the energy transfers, with the value transferred.
- Draw the system boundary (dashed circle): internal arrows redistribute energy, arrows leaving or entering it change the total.
Bubble = type of energy. Arrow = transfer. System boundary = .
The fourth point is the most powerful. Drawing the system boundary sharply separates two types of arrows: internal ones, which move energy from one bubble to another without changing the total (the energy merely changes form), and those that cross the boundary, the only ones that change the overall energy of the system. If no arrow crosses the boundary — or if those that do cancel out — the total energy is conserved. The diagram thus makes the energy balance of the whole process immediately visible.
Bubble diagram: each bubble is a type of energy (with its value in A and in B). The arrows show the transfers. Only arrows crossing the system boundary change .

The link between the interaction diagram and the bubble diagram is direct, and this is what makes the method so effective: there’s no need to guess which energies to draw, because the interaction diagram dictates them. Every wiggly line in the interaction diagram that admits potential energy generates a potential-energy bubble in the bubble diagram. Wiggly lines without potential energy (friction, constraint) generate no bubble at all, but instead direct transfers (arrows) between and , or between the kinetic energies of two bodies.
The operating rule is therefore simple: look at each interaction already identified in the interaction diagram and “translate” it. If the interaction is conservative (weight, spring, Coulomb), a new potential-energy bubble appears, connected to the body’s kinetic energy by the work of the force. If the interaction is dissipative or a constraint, no reservoir is born: only the arrow that carries the energy to where it ends up is drawn.
From the interaction diagram to the bubble diagram: the “weight” wiggly line (which admits ) becomes an bubble. The transfer from to is the work of gravity.
The example of the falling ball shows the mechanism in its purest form. In the interaction diagram there’s a single wiggly line, the weight, linking the ball to the Earth. Since weight is conservative, this wiggly line translates into a gravitational potential-energy bubble . The work of gravity is the arrow that transfers energy from this bubble to the kinetic one: as the ball falls, decreases and grows by the same amount. No arrow crosses the boundary of the system, so total energy is conserved, and this is immediately written as .
