L’attrito fa sempre lavoro negativo: rallenta i corpi trasformando energia cinetica in energia termica.

Friction always does negative work: it slows bodies down, converting kinetic energy into thermal energy. It’s not a “loss” of energy but an irreversible transformation: the body and the surface heat up. Here we see how friction appears in the bubble diagram and how the thermal energy produced is quantified.

Principio — Lavoro dell'attrito

Friction is a force that always does negative work: it slows bodies down, converting kinetic energy into thermal energy. This is not a “loss” of energy but an irreversible transformation: the body and the surface heat up. Unlike what happens with gravity or a spring, the heat produced cannot be fully recovered and returned to the motion: once energy has dispersed into the disordered agitation of particles, it doesn’t spontaneously reorganise back into ordered macroscopic movement.

Principle — Work of friction

The kinetic friction force Fa\vv{F}_a does negative work: Lattr=FaΔsL_{\text{attr}} = -|\vv{F}_a| \cdot |\Delta\vv{s}| The thermal energy of the system increases by Lattr|L_{\text{attr}}|.

The negative sign isn’t a formal detail: it says that, whatever the direction of motion, the friction force is always oriented opposite to the displacement. The scalar product between force and displacement is therefore negative at every instant along the path, and the magnitude of the displacement Δs|\Delta\vv{s}| is the distance actually covered while sliding, not the net displacement between start and finish. This radically distinguishes friction from conservative forces, whose work depends only on the endpoints of the path.

In the bubble diagram friction appears as an arrow from EcinE_\text{cin} to EtermE_\text{term}: it has no bubble of its own because it doesn’t admit potential energy. Conservative forces deserve a bubble, a reservoir where energy can be stored and later drawn back out; friction does not, because its effect is one-way. The arrow pointing towards EtermE_\text{term} never has a companion pointing the other way: it’s the graphical signature of irreversibility.

Bubble diagram with friction: elastic energy turns into kinetic, which in turn becomes gravitational potential and (partly) thermal. Friction is an “arrow” towards EtermE_\text{term}, not a bubble.

Formula chiave

ΔEterm=FaΔs\Delta E_{\text{term}} = |\vv{F}_a|\cdot|\Delta\vv{s}| Eterm=mcsTE_{\text{term}} = m\,c_s\,T dove csc_s = calore specifico

When friction takes energy away from motion, that energy doesn’t vanish: it settles into the bodies as thermal energy, the energy associated with the microscopic agitation of particles. We can quantify it exactly, both from the side of the cause (the work dissipated by friction) and from the side of the effect (the temperature rise of the body storing it).

Key formula

ΔEterm=FaΔs\Delta E_{\text{term}} = |\vv{F}_a|\cdot|\Delta\vv{s}| Eterm=mcsTE_{\text{term}} = m\,c_s\,T where csc_s = specific heat

The first relation links the increase in thermal energy to the work of friction: every joule taken from the motion by sliding a distance Δs|\Delta\vv{s}| against a force Fa|\vv{F}_a| reappears as heat. The second relation instead describes where that heat ends up: the thermal energy stored in a body grows with its mass mm, with its temperature TT, and with a constant characteristic of the material, the specific heat csc_s.

Specific heat measures how much energy is needed to heat one kilogram of a substance by one degree: materials with a high csc_s (such as water) are “roomy” — they absorb a lot of energy while heating up only a little; materials with a low csc_s heat up quickly for the same energy received. This is why, combining the two formulas, we can predict exactly how much a braking block actually heats up: the energy FaΔs|\vv{F}_a|\cdot|\Delta\vv{s}| dissipated by friction spreads through the body according to its mcsm\,c_s, and produces a temperature rise that is smaller the more massive or thermally roomy the body is.

In the energy table this translates into a concrete move: a column is added for EtermE_{\text{term}}. While the kinetic- and potential-energy columns can rise and fall along the motion, exchanging values, the EtermE_{\text{term}} column can only grow. Its increase between one state and the next is exactly the work of friction done in that stretch, and keeping track of it in a dedicated column guarantees that the total energy balance stays closed even in the presence of dissipation.
