The centre of mass is a genuine imaginary body in which some of the system’s quantities are fully summarised, as if the whole mass were concentrated there. Others instead decompose into a “CM” contribution and an “internal” one. Here we see the full picture and an important warning about internal gravitational energy.

  1. massa MCM=MtotM_{\text{CM}} = M_{\text{tot}}, uguale alla massa totale del sistema;
  2. quantità di moto pCM=ptot\vec{p}_{\text{CM}} = \vec{p}_{\text{tot}}, uguale alla quantità di moto totale;
  3. energia potenziale gravitazionale Epot,g,CM=MtotghCME_{\text{pot,g,CM}} = M_{\text{tot}}\,g\,h_{\text{CM}}, uguale all’Epot,gE_\text{pot,g} totale.

  • il contributo “del CM”, calcolato pensando al CM come un punto materiale di massa MtotM_\text{tot};

Ecin,tot=Ecin,CM+Ecin,intLtot=LCM+LintE_\text{cin,tot} = E_\text{cin,CM} + E_\text{cin,int} \qquad \vec{L}_\text{tot} = \vec{L}_\text{CM} + \vec{L}_\text{int}

The centre of mass is not just a geometric point: it is a genuine imaginary body in which some quantities of the system can be summarised, as if the whole mass were concentrated there. Other quantities, instead, split into two parts: a “CM” contribution and an “internal” one, relative to the CM.

Principle — Quantities summarised in the CM

The centre of mass has:

  1. mass MCM=MtotM_{\text{CM}} = M_{\text{tot}}, equal to the system’s total mass;
  2. momentum pCM=ptot\vec{p}_{\text{CM}} = \vec{p}_{\text{tot}}, equal to the total momentum;
  3. gravitational potential energy Epot,g,CM=MtotghCME_{\text{pot,g,CM}} = M_{\text{tot}}\,g\,h_{\text{CM}}, equal to the total Epot,gE_\text{pot,g}.

These three quantities are summarised totally: the CM carries all of them, and nothing “internal” is left over.

Other quantities — kinetic energy and angular momentum — are not fully summarised, but decompose into two contributions:

  • the “CM” contribution, computed by treating the CM as a point mass MtotM_\text{tot};
  • the internal contribution, computed in the CM frame, where velocities are relative to the CM:

Ecin,tot=Ecin,CM+Ecin,intLtot=LCM+LintE_\text{cin,tot} = E_\text{cin,CM} + E_\text{cin,int} \qquad \vec{L}_\text{tot} = \vec{L}_\text{CM} + \vec{L}_\text{int}

  • l’energia cinetica interna (moto delle parti relativo al CM);
  • le energie potenziali interne (molle tra le parti, forze elettrostatiche tra i componenti del sistema);
  • l’energia termica.

A system’s internal energy is defined as its total energy minus the CM’s energy. It is the part of the energy left over once you move into the centre-of-mass frame and “subtract” the overall motion. But you must be careful about what actually belongs to it.

Warning — Gravitational energy is not internal

The total Epot,gE_\text{pot,g} coincides with MtotghCMM_\text{tot}\,g\,h_\text{CM}: it is therefore fully summarised in the CM. Consequently, when calculating internal energy (total energy minus CM energy), gravitational potential energy does not appear in the internal energy, because it has already been entirely subtracted as part of the CM’s energy.

So what does internal energy contain? Three types of contribution, all tied to what happens inside the system, regardless of where it is or how it moves as a whole:

  • internal kinetic energy (motion of the parts relative to the CM);
  • internal potential energies (springs between the parts, electrostatic forces between the system’s components);
  • thermal energy.

The guiding idea is the separation between the system’s “collective motion” (captured by the CM) and its “internal life” (captured by the internal energy). Gravity acts on the system as a whole — through its centre of gravity — and for this reason belongs to the first group, not the second.
