Problem
A disc of radius and surface density has a circular hole of radius centred at . Where is the CM located?
Solution
We use the anti-matter method: whole disc (positive mass) plus hole (negative mass).
Mass of the whole disc (radius , area ):
Mass of the hole (radius , area ):
Anti-matter formula (the hole enters with a minus sign):
The CM shifts slightly in the direction opposite the hole: the hole is at , so removing mass from that side pulls the centre of gravity toward the opposite quadrant.

Astronomical! But this is an artefact of the toy model: with only particles, sharing out means an enormous energy per particle. With a real gas of particles at speeds of a few m/s, the same formula would give a reasonable temperature.

Problem
A door of length is subject to a force applied at the edge and a force at the midpoint of the door, both perpendicular to the door. Find the force at the hinge for equilibrium.
Solution
Choice of pole. It is convenient to take moments about the hinge (point O): that way the hinge reaction, applied right at O, has zero lever arm and does not appear in the moment balance.
Moment balance. acts at the edge (lever arm ), at the midpoint of the door (lever arm ). Assuming they produce rotation in opposite senses:
Conclusion. The resultant moment is not zero: the door is not in rotational equilibrium and tends to rotate about the hinge. To balance it, an opposing moment of is required.
Note: the hinge reaction alone cannot supply this moment (it has zero lever arm about O); a third force applied at some distance from the hinge is needed. For example, a perpendicular force applied at the edge () would need to be , in the direction that opposes the rotation.

Problem
Two children of masses and sit at the two ends of a seesaw. Explain qualitatively where the centre of mass of the two-children system is, and where the fulcrum must be placed for the seesaw to be balanced.
Solution
The centre of mass is the weighted average of the positions: the heavier child “pulls” it towards themselves. Letting be the distance between the two children, and taking the origin at the light child, the distance of the CM from is The CM is therefore located at of the distance from the child, i.e. closer to the child.

Problem
A rocket in ballistic flight explodes mid-trajectory, splitting into two fragments. Explain, using Newton’s second law for the centre of mass, why (in the absence of air resistance) the centre of mass of the fragments continues to follow the original parabolic trajectory. State what changes in the CM frame immediately after the explosion.
Solution
Why the parabola remains. The explosion is due to forces internal to the system: by Newton’s third law they occur in equal and opposite pairs and cancel in the sum. The only external force remaining is weight. Hence The centre of mass continues to have acceleration , exactly as before: it carries on undisturbed along the same parabola, as if the explosion had not happened.
In the CM frame. Immediately after the explosion, in the CM frame the total momentum is zero ( is unchanged by the internal collision). The two fragments therefore set off with equal and opposite momenta: . Viewed from the CM, the explosion appears perfectly symmetric, with the pieces moving apart in opposite directions.

(a) Traccia qualitativamente e motivalo.

Problem
An isolated system made of two blocks connected by a spring oscillates on a frictionless rail. The graph shows the position and of the two blocks as a function of time: two sinusoids in antiphase, centred on different average values. (a) Sketch qualitatively and justify it. (b) Explain how the mass ratio can be recognised from the amplitudes.
Solution
(a) is a straight line. The system is isolated (no external force): the spring force is internal. Hence is constant and is a straight line. The oscillations of the two blocks, summed with weight , cancel out: does not oscillate at all. If the CM is initially at rest, the line is horizontal.
(b) Ratio of the amplitudes. Since (with no oscillations on the CM), the oscillations of the two blocks about the CM must compensate each other instant by instant: . Hence The lighter block oscillates with a larger amplitude. The ratio of the amplitudes is the inverse of the mass ratio.

Problem
The rotating diver. A diver jumps off the springboard and performs a somersault in mid-air. During the flight they move their arms and legs. (a) Does their centre of mass follow a trajectory different from the parabola of a point body? (b) Can the sum of their internal angular momenta change while they are in the air? (c) How do they actually use their arms to speed up or slow down the rotation? Argue without calculations.
Solution
(a) No. While the diver is in flight, only weight (an external force) acts on them: the centre of mass follows a perfect parabola, like a point particle. Moving the arms and legs are internal forces that do not shift the CM.
(b) No. In the air there are no significant external torques (weight, applied at the CM, has zero torque about the CM). Hence the internal angular momentum is conserved: its sum cannot change.
(c) By varying the moment of inertia. Since is constant, reducing increases and vice versa. Tucking in (arms and legs close to the axis) decreases and the rotation becomes faster; opening out increases and the rotation slows down. This is how the diver controls the number of rotations and “brakes” before entering the water.

Un razzo è fermo nello spazio profondo. Accende i motori e accelera.

Problem
A rocket is at rest in deep space. It fires its engines and accelerates. Does its centre of mass also move? And if instead we consider “rocket + expelled gases” as the system, does the centre of mass of that system accelerate?
Solution
Rocket alone. Yes, the centre of mass of the rocket alone accelerates. Relative to this system, the expelled gases have “left” and exert an external force on it (thrust): , so .
Rocket + gases. No, the centre of mass of the complete system rocket + expelled gases stays fixed. No external force acts on this system (we are in deep space): the forces between rocket and gases are internal and cancel. The total momentum stays zero: the rocket goes forward exactly as the gases go backward, and their common CM does not move.
This is the same principle as the explosion: internal forces redistribute momentum but do not move the centre of gravity of the whole.

Newton’s second law is applied to the centre of mass of the whole hourglass (glass + sand): where is what the scale reads (the constraint reaction) and is the vertical acceleration of the CM.
While the sand is flowing, the falling column of grains is accelerated downward; the dominant effect in the flow regime is that the falling stream decelerates sharply as it strikes the pile below. The overall balance gives a centre of mass whose dynamics require a constraint reaction greater than the static weight: In terms of the CM: the net change in the vertical momentum of the sand (impact at the bottom) exceeds the “deficit” due to the grains in flight, and by the second law for the CM the scale must push harder than the weight alone.
Note: this is a classic and subtle problem; the initial and final transients of the flow can give brief deviations, but in the steady-state falling regime the reading turns out to be slightly higher than the resting weight.

Vero o falso?
Soluzione
- (a) Vero. Sistema isolato costante: moto rettilineo uniforme.
- (b) Falso.

La pallina (massa ) è all’estremo .

Esplode in tre pezzi.

Problem
Explosion and total momentum. A rocket travels at velocity with total momentum . It explodes into three pieces. Explain in a few lines why the sum of the momenta of the pieces stays equal to , even though each piece goes in a different direction.
Solution
The explosion is produced by forces internal to the rocket. By Newton’s third law, every push between two fragments is accompanied by an equal and opposite reaction: in the vector sum these forces cancel in pairs. Since there are no external forces (or they are negligible), the total momentum cannot change: The individual pieces can fly off in any direction, but their vector sum remains . Equivalently: the centre of mass of the fragments keeps moving at the same velocity as the rocket before the explosion.

Elastico contro completamente anelastico. Spiega in poche righe la differenza tra urto elastico e urto completamente anelastico, indicando quale conservazione vale in ciascuno e dove finisce l’energia mancante nell’anelastico.
Soluzione

Problem
Elastic versus perfectly inelastic. Explain in a few lines the difference between an elastic collision and a perfectly inelastic collision, stating which conservation law holds in each case and where the missing energy goes in the inelastic one.
Solution
In both types of collision, total momentum is conserved (the collision forces are internal): so in both cases the velocity of the centre of mass remains unchanged.
- Elastic collision: kinetic energy is also conserved. The bodies bounce apart; before and after is the same.
- Perfectly inelastic collision: the bodies remain stuck together and only momentum is conserved. Part of the kinetic energy — precisely all of the , the energy in the CM frame — is lost.
The missing energy in the inelastic case does not vanish: it is converted into heat, permanent deformation and sound.

Soluzione
Problem
Person on a boat. A person stands at one end of a small boat at rest on the water. They walk to the other end. Describe how the boat moves and why the centre of mass of the system (person + boat) stays put, neglecting friction with the water.
Solution
The person + boat system is horizontally isolated (friction with the water is negligible): the total momentum is zero and stays zero, so the centre of mass does not shift relative to the water.
For the CM to stay put, when the person moves forward in one direction the boat moves backward in the opposite direction, so that Since the person is lighter than the boat, their displacement is larger in magnitude, but the two mass-weighted contributions cancel exactly. In the figure the red point (CM) stays on the same vertical line before and after.

Fantafisica: terzo principio infranto.

Problem
Science fiction: third law broken. What would happen if Newton’s third law stopped holding? In particular, how would the conservation of the centre of mass of an isolated system be affected?
Solution
The conservation of total momentum — and hence the inertial motion of the centre of mass — depends crucially on the third law: it is what guarantees that internal forces occur in equal-and-opposite pairs, cancelling in the sum.
If the third law failed, internal forces would no longer cancel in the vector sum. Then even for an isolated system. The centre of mass could spontaneously accelerate, generating momentum “out of nothing”, with no interaction with the outside. A thruster that pushes itself along by pulling on its own bootstraps would become possible — something the third law forbids.

Fantafisica: massa variabile all’istante.

Problem
Science fiction: instantaneously variable mass. Imagine a particle suddenly doubling its own mass while keeping the same velocity. What happens to the centre of mass of the system (particle + the rest of the universe)?
Solution
The centre of mass is the average of the positions weighted by the masses. If a particle suddenly doubles its mass, its weight in the average increases: the centre of mass would instantaneously jump towards the enlarged particle, with nothing actually having moved.
Worse: keeping the same velocity but with double the mass, its momentum would double, and so the total momentum of the system would grow out of nothing, violating conservation: It is precisely to avoid these paradoxes that mass is a conserved quantity: it cannot appear or disappear, and the centre of mass of an isolated system cannot make jumps.

Ammortizzatori.

Shock absorbers. A car falls from a small height onto a track. Explain why shock absorbers increase safety, reasoning in terms of impulse.
Solution
On landing, the change in momentum — that is, the impulse — is fixed by the falling speed and the mass: it does not depend on how the stop happens.
But : for a fixed impulse, the average force is . Shock absorbers, by compressing, lengthen the time of the stop. As increases, the force decreases proportionally: Long, soft shock absorbers spread the impact over more time, reducing the peak forces on passengers and frame: that’s why they increase safety.

Airbag.
Problem
Airbag. The airbag saves lives because it “cushions” the impact of the body against the dashboard. Explain why it works, in terms of impulse and force.
Solution
In the impact, the change in momentum of the body — the impulse — is fixed by the collision speed: the body must go from to regardless. What the airbag changes is the time over which this happens.
Against the rigid dashboard the stop lasts very little time (); with the airbag it extends to –. Since , lengthening by about times reduces the average force by about times: In addition, the airbag spreads the force over a larger area, reducing the local pressure. Less force and less pressure: that’s why it saves lives.

The two particles change velocity in the collision (their lines “break” at the collision point), but the centre of mass doesn’t notice: During the collision, the CM line undergoes no change in slope: the collision, being due to internal forces, leaves no trace on the motion of the barycentre. Conservation of momentum (system initially at rest). The expelled water carries away momentum downward; the bottle recoils upward: This is an estimate: the jet is not instantaneous and the mass of the bottle changes as it expels the water, but the order of magnitude is correct.

Sfida: urto a tre corpi simultanei.

Problem
Challenge: simultaneous three-body collision. Three identical balls of mass move in a line: the first at , the second at rest, the third at . The first collides elastically with the second and, at the same instant, the third collides with the second. What is the final state?
Solution
For equal masses in a head-on elastic collision, velocities are exchanged. The setup is perfectly symmetric: the first () and the third () reach the second (at rest) simultaneously.
At the instant of collision, the second ball simultaneously receives the exchange from both: it gives/receives so that, by symmetry and by conservation of momentum and energy, it remains at rest. The first sets off with the velocity arriving from the right () and the third with the velocity arriving from the left (): This is the Newton’s cradle effect: the balls at the ends bounce back and the middle one doesn’t move. Check: momentum (as before) and kinetic energy (as before) ✓.

Problem
Challenge: chain on a table. A chain of length and linear mass density rests on a table, with a small part () already hanging over the edge. Calculate the velocity at which the chain completely leaves the table, neglecting friction. Use conservation of energy with the barycentre.
Solution
Setup. Total mass . The chain is inextensible: all segments have the same velocity . We use conservation of energy, calculating the potential energy with the barycentre. Take the edge of the table as height (the hanging segment sits at negative heights).
With a hanging segment of length , the potential energy is (the segment on the table is at height ).
