Rilancia col pulsante.

This is perhaps the most instructive of all rotational-mechanics problems: the same physical setup — a projectile striking a rod — gives rise to three completely different problems depending on two choices: is the rod pivoted or free? is the collision inelastic or elastic? Depending on the answers, which quantities are conserved changes, and hence how many equations we have and which unknowns we can determine. This section compares the three cases on the same setup, then draws the general rules for when to use L=IωL = I\omega and Ecin=12Iω2E_\text{cin} = \tfrac{1}{2}I\omega^2.

Try it — interactive simulation

A projectile strikes a free rod: choose the impact point — centre of mass, off-centre or end — and compare pure translation with translation plus rotation. The readouts show total linear and angular momentum, which are conserved in every case. Relaunch with the button.

Let us analyse three different problems built on the same physical setup, so that they can be compared. A projectile (mp=0,3  kgm_p = 0{,}3\;\mathrm{kg}, vA=900  m/sv_A = 900\;\mathrm{m/s}) travels horizontally and strikes a uniform rod (M=4  kgM = 4\;\mathrm{kg}, L=2  mL = 2\;\mathrm{m}) initially at rest, hitting one of its ends.

Two switches generate the three cases:

  1. is the rod hinged at the other end (it cannot translate) or free to slide on a frictionless rail?
  2. is the collision inelastic (the projectile embeds itself) or elastic (the projectile bounces off)?

In cases 1 and 2 the rod is hinged; in case 3 it is free. Changing these conditions changes which quantities are conserved — momentum, kinetic energy, angular momentum — and with them the number of equations and unknowns in the problem.

The three cases of the projectile–rod problem. In cases 1 and 2 the rod is hinged; in case 3 the hinge slides freely on a horizontal rail. In the elastic collisions (2 and 3) the projectile bounces off without embedding itself.

mpvALLA=ItotωLB\underbrace{m_p v_A L}_{L^A} = \underbrace{I_\text{tot}\,\omega}_{L^B}

Itot=13ML2+mpL2=1344+0,34=5,33+1,2=6,53  kgm2I_\text{tot} = \tfrac{1}{3}ML^2 + m_p L^2 = \tfrac{1}{3}\cdot 4\cdot 4 + 0{,}3\cdot 4 = 5{,}33 + 1{,}2 = 6{,}53\;\mathrm{kg\,m^2}

da cui

ω=mpvALItot=0,390026,5382,7  rad/s\omega = \frac{m_p v_A L}{I_\text{tot}} = \frac{0{,}3\cdot 900\cdot 2}{6{,}53} \approx 82{,}7\;\mathrm{rad/s}

Ecin,A=12mpvA2=120,3810000=121500  JE_\text{cin,A} = \tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_A^2 = \tfrac{1}{2}\cdot 0{,}3\cdot 810\,000 = 121\,500\;\mathrm{J}

Ecin,B=12Itotω2=126,5382,7222320  JE_\text{cin,B} = \tfrac{1}{2}I_\text{tot}\omega^2 = \tfrac{1}{2}\cdot 6{,}53\cdot 82{,}7^2 \approx 22\,320\;\mathrm{J}

Etermica=1215002232099180  JE_\text{termica} = 121\,500 - 22\,320 \approx 99\,180\;\mathrm{J}

The rod is hinged and the projectile embeds itself in it. Before calculating anything, the decisive question is: what is conserved and what isn’t?

  • Angular momentum about the hinge is conserved: the hinge’s constraint reaction has zero arm about the hinge itself, so it produces no moment.
  • Momentum is not conserved: the hinge’s impulsive constraint reaction transmits an external impulse to the system.
  • Kinetic energy is not conserved: the collision is inelastic, part of the energy turns into heat.

Pole: the hinge

The hinge is the only sensible choice. About any other pole, the hinge’s reaction would have a non-zero arm and would contribute an external angular impulse, making angular momentum non-conserved.

One unknown (ω\omega, the angular velocity after the collision with the embedded projectile) and one equation (conservation of LL about the hinge):

mpvALLA=ItotωLB\underbrace{m_p v_A L}_{L^A} = \underbrace{I_\text{tot}\,\omega}_{L^B}

The system’s moment of inertia (rod + point-like projectile at the end) about the hinge is

Itot=13ML2+mpL2=1344+0,34=5,33+1,2=6,53  kgm2I_\text{tot} = \tfrac{1}{3}ML^2 + m_p L^2 = \tfrac{1}{3}\cdot 4\cdot 4 + 0{,}3\cdot 4 = 5{,}33 + 1{,}2 = 6{,}53\;\mathrm{kg\,m^2}

from which

ω=mpvALItot=0,390026,5382,7  rad/s\omega = \frac{m_p v_A L}{I_\text{tot}} = \frac{0{,}3\cdot 900\cdot 2}{6{,}53} \approx 82{,}7\;\mathrm{rad/s}

Energy tells us how violent the collision was:

Ecin,A=12mpvA2=120,3810000=121500  JE_\text{cin,A} = \tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_A^2 = \tfrac{1}{2}\cdot 0{,}3\cdot 810\,000 = 121\,500\;\mathrm{J}

Ecin,B=12Itotω2=126,5382,7222320  JE_\text{cin,B} = \tfrac{1}{2}I_\text{tot}\omega^2 = \tfrac{1}{2}\cdot 6{,}53\cdot 82{,}7^2 \approx 22\,320\;\mathrm{J}

Etermica=1215002232099180  JE_\text{termica} = 121\,500 - 22\,320 \approx 99\,180\;\mathrm{J}

About 82% of the initial kinetic energy went into heat: the hallmark of a strongly inelastic collision.

A body pinned at a fixed point

For a rigid body hinged at a fixed point PP you can use directly L=IPωL = I_P\,\omega and Ecin=12IPω2E_\text{cin} = \tfrac{1}{2}I_P\,\omega^2, where IPI_P is the moment of inertia about PP (not about the centre of mass).

mpvAL=mpvBL+Iastacardineωm_p v_A L = m_p v_B L + I_\text{asta}^\text{cardine}\,\omega

con Iastacardine=13ML2=5,33  kgm2I_\text{asta}^\text{cardine} = \tfrac{1}{3}ML^2 = 5{,}33\;\mathrm{kg\,m^2} (solo l’asta: il proiettile non si conficca più).

Equazione dell’energia cinetica:

12mpvA2=12mpvB2+12Iastacardineω2\tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_A^2 = \tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_B^2 + \tfrac{1}{2}I_\text{asta}^\text{cardine}\,\omega^2

Perché niente conservazione di p\vec{p}

Same hinged rod, but now the collision is elastic: the projectile bounces elastically off the end of the rod instead of embedding itself. Only one condition changes, and the whole balance changes with it.

  • Angular momentum about the hinge is conserved (as in case 1, same reason: the hinge’s reaction has zero arm).
  • Momentum is not conserved (as in case 1: there is the hinge’s impulsive reaction).
  • Kinetic energy is conserved: the collision is elastic, Etermica=0E_\text{termica} = 0.

Now there are two unknowns: ω\omega (angular velocity of the rod) and vBv_B (velocity of the projectile after the collision, with sign). So two equations are needed: conservation of LL and of EcinE_\text{cin}.

Angular momentum equation (about the hinge):

mpvAL=mpvBL+Iastacardineωm_p v_A L = m_p v_B L + I_\text{asta}^\text{cardine}\,\omega

with Iastacardine=13ML2=5,33  kgm2I_\text{asta}^\text{cardine} = \tfrac{1}{3}ML^2 = 5{,}33\;\mathrm{kg\,m^2} (only the rod: the projectile no longer embeds itself).

Kinetic energy equation:

12mpvA2=12mpvB2+12Iastacardineω2\tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_A^2 = \tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_B^2 + \tfrac{1}{2}I_\text{asta}^\text{cardine}\,\omega^2

Summary of case 2

Two unknowns (vBv_B, ω\omega), two equations (LL, EcinE_\text{cin}): a quadratic system. It is solved like a generalised 1D elastic collision. As always in elastic collisions, the system has two solutions: the trivial one (no collision, vB=vAv_B = v_A, ω=0\omega = 0) and the physical one.

Why there's no conservation of p\vec{p}

Even in an elastic collision, if the rod is hinged the hinge exerts an impulsive constraint reaction that transmits an external impulse: total momentum is not conserved. You cannot write mpvA=mpvB+somethingm_p v_A = m_p v_B + \text{something}. This is the most treacherous mistake in this problem.

  • vBv_B = velocità finale del proiettile;
  • vCMv_\text{CM} = velocità del centro di massa dell’asta (traslazione);

mpvA=mpvB+MvCMm_p v_A = m_p v_B + M v_\text{CM}

mpvAL2=mpvBL2+ICMωm_p v_A\cdot\tfrac{L}{2} = m_p v_B\cdot\tfrac{L}{2} + I_\text{CM}\,\omega

Energia cinetica:

12mpvA2=12mpvB2+12MvCM2Ecin,CM+12ICMω2Ecin,int\tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_A^2 = \tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_B^2 + \underbrace{\tfrac{1}{2}M v_\text{CM}^2}_{E_\text{cin,CM}} + \underbrace{\tfrac{1}{2}I_\text{CM}\omega^2}_{E_\text{cin,int}}

Now the rod is free to slide on a frictionless rail: no fixed hinge. This radically changes the balance, because the impulsive constraint reaction that ruined conservation of momentum disappears.

  • Momentum is conserved: there are no impulsive external horizontal forces.
  • Kinetic energy is conserved: elastic collision.
  • Angular momentum about any fixed pole is conserved: no impulsive external force, hence no external moment (weight is balanced by the rail’s reaction, and both are negligible during the instantaneous collision).

With all three conservation laws available, there are three unknowns:

  • vBv_B = final velocity of the projectile;
  • vCMv_\text{CM} = velocity of the rod’s centre of mass (translation);
  • ω\omega = angular velocity of the rod (rotation about its CM).

And three equations: conservation of pxp_x, LL, EcinE_\text{cin}.

Momentum:

mpvA=mpvB+MvCMm_p v_A = m_p v_B + M v_\text{CM}

Angular momentum (about a fixed pole, for example the initial position of the rod’s CM):

mpvAL2=mpvBL2+ICMωm_p v_A\cdot\tfrac{L}{2} = m_p v_B\cdot\tfrac{L}{2} + I_\text{CM}\,\omega

with ICM=112ML2I_\text{CM} = \tfrac{1}{12}ML^2 — the rod’s moment of inertia about its own CM, because here the rod is not hinged.

Kinetic energy:

12mpvA2=12mpvB2+12MvCM2Ecin,CM+12ICMω2Ecin,int\tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_A^2 = \tfrac{1}{2}m_p v_B^2 + \underbrace{\tfrac{1}{2}M v_\text{CM}^2}_{E_\text{cin,CM}} + \underbrace{\tfrac{1}{2}I_\text{CM}\omega^2}_{E_\text{cin,int}}

König's theorem in action

In case 3 the rod’s kinetic energy splits into two contributions (König’s theorem): the translational one of the centre of mass plus the internal rotational one about the CM. This is the decomposition that keeps the accounting consistent and that distinguishes the free body from the hinged body. With three unknowns and three equations, this is the most complete of the three cases.

Comparing the three cases in a single table, a common thread emerges: every time we add a conservation law, we gain one more unknown that we can determine.

Angular momentum about the right pole is conserved in all three cases: it is the most robust quantity, the one that survives even the presence of the hinge. Momentum, on the other hand, is the most fragile, because the fixed constraint destroys it; it reappears only when the rod is free.

The unknowns–equations balance

In all three cases the number of unknowns matches exactly the number of available conservation laws. This is not a coincidence: it is the consistency check that guarantees the problem has a solution. If, on counting, you find more unknowns than equations, you have forgotten a conservation law or set up the problem wrongly.

Principio — Due casi d'uso

The compact formulas L=IωL = I\omega and Ecin=12Iω2E_\text{cin} = \tfrac{1}{2}I\omega^2 look simple, but hide a trap: which II? The answer depends on how the body moves, and there are two distinct situations that must never be confused.

Principle — Two use cases

Case A — body pinned at a fixed point PP. If the rod is hinged and rotates about the hinge PP, use: L=IPωEcin=12IPω2L = I_P\,\omega \qquad E_\text{cin} = \tfrac{1}{2}I_P\,\omega^2 where IPI_P is the moment of inertia about PP (not the CM). For a uniform bar about one end, from the Huygens–Steiner theorem: IP=112ML2+M(L2)2=13ML2I_P = \tfrac{1}{12}ML^2 + M(\tfrac{L}{2})^2 = \tfrac{1}{3}ML^2.

Case B — body that translates and rotates (rolling, collision with a free rod). Use König’s theorem, separating the CM contribution from the internal one: Ltot=rCM×ptotLCM+ICMωLintEcin,tot=12MvCM2Ecin,CM+12ICMω2Ecin,intL_\text{tot} = \underbrace{\vec{r}_\text{CM}\times\vec{p}_\text{tot}}_{L_\text{CM}} + \underbrace{I_\text{CM}\,\omega}_{L_\text{int}} \qquad E_\text{cin,tot} = \underbrace{\tfrac{1}{2}M v_\text{CM}^2}_{E_\text{cin,CM}} + \underbrace{\tfrac{1}{2}I_\text{CM}\omega^2}_{E_\text{cin,int}} where ICMI_\text{CM} is the moment of inertia about the CM.

The golden rule: if the body is fixed at a point, use IPI_P; if the body translates and rotates, use ICMI_\text{CM} and separately add the centre-of-mass term.

Don't mix up the two cases

Common mistake: using ICMI_\text{CM} when the body rotates about a hinge, or forgetting the CM term in case B. In the hinged-rod case, if you mistakenly used ICM=112ML2I_\text{CM} = \tfrac{1}{12}ML^2 instead of 13ML2\tfrac{1}{3}ML^2, you would get an ω\omega four times too large and a kinetic energy sixteen times too large. The lost-energy check (which must be 0\geq 0 in an inelastic collision) would fail, flagging the error.

(12mdR2+mprA2)ωA=(12mdR2+mprB2)ωB\left(\tfrac{1}{2}m_d R^2 + m_p r_A^2\right)\omega_A = \left(\tfrac{1}{2}m_d R^2 + m_p r_B^2\right)\omega_B

Another classic example of conservation of angular momentum: a disc rotating about a central pivot, with a package hanging from a rope that progressively unwinds from the rim, moving away from the centre.

Choosing the centre of the disc as the pole, the pivot’s reaction and the (radial) tension produce no moment: the system’s total angular momentum is conserved. With the constraint v=ωrv = \omega r between the package’s velocity and the angular velocity, the conservation law reads

(12mdR2+mprA2)ωA=(12mdR2+mprB2)ωB\left(\tfrac{1}{2}m_d R^2 + m_p r_A^2\right)\omega_A = \left(\tfrac{1}{2}m_d R^2 + m_p r_B^2\right)\omega_B

Numerically, with md=4  kgm_d = 4\;\mathrm{kg}, R=1  mR = 1\;\mathrm{m}, mp=7  kgm_p = 7\;\mathrm{kg}, rA=1  mr_A = 1\;\mathrm{m}, rB=2  mr_B = 2\;\mathrm{m} and ωA=1  rad/s\omega_A = 1\;\mathrm{rad/s}, one gets ωB=0,3  rad/s\omega_B = 0{,}3\;\mathrm{rad/s}.

The system slows down: as the package moves away from the centre, its contribution mpr2m_p r^2 to the moment of inertia grows (from 712=77\cdot 1^2 = 7 to 722=287\cdot 2^2 = 28), and since L=IωL = I\omega stays constant, the angular velocity must fall. It is the same physics as the skater, run in reverse: spreading out the mass distribution decreases ω\omega. The numerical solution is in the dedicated problem.

The most famous example of conservation of angular momentum is the skater who spins on the spot and speeds up by pulling in her arms. It’s a non-rigid system: it changes its own shape, and hence its own moment of inertia, while rotating.

Example — Conservation in a non-rigid system

A skater spins with her arms out at ωA=2  rad/s\omega_A = 2\;\mathrm{rad/s} and moment of inertia IA=8  kgm2I_A = 8\;\mathrm{kg\,m^2}. Pulling her arms in to her body, the moment of inertia drops to IB=3  kgm2I_B = 3\;\mathrm{kg\,m^2}. What is the final angular velocity?

No external torque acts (friction of the ice about the vertical axis is negligible), so L\vec{L} is conserved: IAωA=IBωB    ωB=IAIBωA=8325,3  rad/sI_A\omega_A = I_B\omega_B \;\Rightarrow\; \omega_B = \frac{I_A}{I_B}\omega_A = \frac{8}{3}\cdot 2 \approx 5{,}3\;\mathrm{rad/s} The skater spins more than twice as fast!

There’s a counter-intuitive detail, though. While the angular momentum stays constant, the rotational kinetic energy increases. Writing it as Ecin,rot=12Iω2=L22IE_\text{cin,rot} = \tfrac{1}{2}I\omega^2 = \dfrac{L^2}{2I}, you can see that as II decreases (at constant LL) the energy grows. Where does this extra energy come from? From the muscular work of the arms: to bring them in towards the axis, the skater must pull them against the apparent centrifugal force, and that work ends up in the rotational kinetic energy.

The pirouette effect

This is the celebrated “pirouette effect”: shortening the radius of rotation reduces II and, to conserve L=IωL = I\omega, increases ω\omega. Conservation of angular momentum doesn’t give energy for free — the body supplies it through its own work — but it redistributes the rotation spectacularly. The same principle explains the diver who tucks into a ball.
