A stationary charge in a magnetic field feels no force at all: magnetism “sees” only moving charges. And even a charge moving along the direction of the field feels nothing. The magnetic force appears only when the velocity has a component perpendicular to , and it is given by the famous Lorentz force.
Law — Lorentz force
On a charge moving with velocity in a magnetic field acts the force:
The cross product packs in three pieces of information. The magnitude is
where is the angle between and . The direction is perpendicular to both and : the force points out of the plane containing the two vectors. The sense is determined with the right-hand rule (and must be reversed if the charge is negative).
Key formula
- if : (maximum force)
- if : (no force)
Since is always perpendicular to , the Lorentz force never does any work: it does not change the kinetic energy or the magnitude of the velocity, only the direction of motion. This is the observation from which the whole rich phenomenology of the chapter follows, from circles in the cyclotron to the aurora borealis.

The cross product has a sense that no scalar formula can give: a geometric convention is needed. The right-hand rule provides it reliably.
Principle — Right-hand rule for the cross product
For :
- Index finger in the direction of (first factor)
- Middle finger in the direction of (second factor)
- Thumb gives the direction of (result)
The angle between index and middle finger must be less than .
Applied to the Lorentz force : index finger along , middle finger along , the thumb gives the direction of for a positive charge. For a negative charge the direction is reversed: simply flip the final result.
Hitchhiker's rule
To find the sense of a rotation: curl the fingers of the right hand in the sense of the rotation; the thumb, extended like a hitchhiker’s, gives the direction of the vector (angular velocity, angular momentum, field inside a solenoid, etc.). It is the same right hand, used for “axial” quantities rather than for cross products between two given vectors.
The most common mistake is using the left hand, or swapping the order of the factors: both flip the direction. When in doubt, it is best to redo the gesture slowly, checking that the index and middle fingers really do point along and .

When and is uniform, the Lorentz force is always perpendicular to the velocity: its magnitude is constant but its direction changes continuously. This is exactly the behaviour of a centripetal force, so the trajectory is a circle traced at constant speed.
Setting the magnitude of the Lorentz force equal to the centripetal force :
The radius of this circle is called the Larmor radius. It grows with the particle’s momentum and decreases as the field increases.
Positive charge in an inward field: the Lorentz force always points towards the centre and the trajectory is a circle of radius .
Observations on the Larmor radius
- If increases, decreases: a stronger field curves the path more.
- If , : straight-line motion, no force.
- If increases, increases: different masses separate — this is the principle of the mass spectrometer.
Going further — Mass spectrometer
The fact that depends on (for the same , , ) makes it possible to distinguish isotopes: the same element with two different mass numbers, for example and , produces two circles of slightly different radius in the same magnetic field. This is the basis of the mass spectrometer, a fundamental instrument in analytical chemistry and in the study of cosmic rays.

The formula contains no fewer than four quantities (, , , ): a single radius cannot yield just one of them. The laboratory strategy is to cascade two devices. The first, the velocity selector, fixes the speed of the beam by filtering it.
In a region where an electric field and a magnetic field coexist perpendicular to each other, a particle feels the total Lorentz force:
If the velocity is orthogonal to both fields, the electric force and the magnetic force act along the same line in opposite directions. They balance exactly when
Velocity selector: crossed and . Only particles with carry straight on; the others deflect and end up against the walls.
The particle with velocity exactly carries straight on and passes through. Faster or slower particles are deflected and end up against the walls. The selector therefore lets through a beam monochromatic in velocity, independent of and : whichever particle emerges, it has the same velocity .

Esempio — Isotopi dell'uranio

The selector-spectrometer measures velocities fixed from outside. To accelerate particles to much higher energies, the cyclotron is used instead, invented by Ernest Lawrence in 1929 (Nobel Prize 1939).
The idea exploits a surprising fact: in circular motion in a uniform , the orbital period does not depend on the speed. Indeed, from and :
The frequency is called the cyclotron frequency. It is fixed only by the particle (, ) and the field : whether the particle is slow (small circle) or fast (large circle), it takes the same time to complete one revolution. A faster particle traces a longer circle at exactly the greater speed needed to keep the period constant.
Key formula — Cyclotron
The cyclotron consists of two hollow half-discs (the D’s, or “dees”) separated by a small gap. An alternating voltage of frequency is applied between the two D’s. A particle injected at the centre traces a semicircle in the first D, is accelerated crossing the gap (where the voltage has the right direction), traces a larger semicircle in the second D, and so on. Since the period is constant, synchronism with the voltage is maintained every turn; the radius grows on each half-turn, up to the edge where the particle is extracted.
Cyclotron: two hollow D’s separated by a gap with an alternating voltage at frequency . The particle spirals outward gaining energy on each pass through the gap.
The maximum kinetic energy depends on the radius of the device: when , the velocity is and hence
Example — A small cyclotron for nuclear medicine
A cyclotron with and accelerates protons (, ): with . Energies of this order are enough to produce short-lived radioactive isotopes (for example ) used in hospital PET scans.
From the cyclotron to the synchrotron
At higher energies the velocity approaches and the relativistic mass grows: the cyclotron frequency is no longer constant and synchronism is lost. Two tricks are then used: varying dynamically with (synchro-cyclotron) or also varying while keeping the radius constant (synchrotron). Synchrotrons such as the LHC at CERN, with , accelerate protons to , a million times the energy of a small hospital cyclotron.
