Onda elettromagnetica piana armonica

E=(0,  E0cos(kxωt),  0)\vec{E} = \left(0,\; E_0\cos(kx-\omega t),\; 0\right) B=(0,  0,  B0cos(kxωt))\vec{B} = \left(0,\; 0,\; B_0\cos(kx-\omega t)\right) con k=2π/λk = 2\pi/\lambda, ω=2π/T\omega = 2\pi/T, e le relazioni λ/T=ceB0=E0/c\lambda/T = c \qquad\text{e}\qquad |B_0| = |E_0|/c

A plane electromagnetic wave propagating along the xx axis has a very simple, regular structure. The electric field oscillates along a fixed direction (say yy), the magnetic field along an orthogonal direction (zz), and both are perpendicular to the direction of propagation: the wave is transverse.

Plane harmonic electromagnetic wave

E=(0,  E0cos(kxωt),  0)\vec{E} = \left(0,\; E_0\cos(kx-\omega t),\; 0\right) B=(0,  0,  B0cos(kxωt))\vec{B} = \left(0,\; 0,\; B_0\cos(kx-\omega t)\right) with k=2π/λk = 2\pi/\lambda, ω=2π/T\omega = 2\pi/T, and the relations λ/T=candB0=E0/c\lambda/T = c \qquad\text{and}\qquad |B_0| = |E_0|/c

The two fields oscillate in phase (same cos(kxωt)\cos(kx-\omega t)): they vanish together and reach their maximum together. The vectors E\vec{E}, B\vec{B} and the direction of propagation form a right-handed triad, orderable with the right-hand rule: E×B\vec{E}\times\vec{B} points in the direction of propagation.

Plane EM wave: E\vec{E} (gold) oscillates in the xyxy plane, B\vec{B} (blue) in the xzxz plane, in phase; the wave advances along xx at speed cc.

The fact that B0=E0/c|B_0| = |E_0|/c explains why the magnetic field of a light wave is numerically tiny compared with the electric field: dividing by c3108c \approx 3\cdot 10^8 m/s reduces it by almost nine orders of magnitude. This does not mean that B\vec{B} is “less important”: the two fields carry, on average, the same energy.

I=E×Bμ0\ev{\vec{I} = \frac{\vec{E}\times\vec{B}}{\mu_0}}

I=EBμ0|\vec{I}| = \frac{|\vec{E}|\,|\vec{B}|}{\mu_0} Media temporale di un’onda armonica: I=E022cμ0\langle |\vec{I}|\rangle = \frac{E_0^2}{2\,c\,\mu_0}

An electromagnetic wave carries energy. The quantity that describes its flow is the Poynting vector:

Poynting vector

I=E×Bμ0\ev{\vec{I} = \frac{\vec{E}\times\vec{B}}{\mu_0}}

Its direction is that of propagation of the wave (it coincides with E×B\vec{E}\times\vec{B}), and its magnitude is measured in W/m2\text{W}/\text{m}^2: it is a power per unit area, i.e. the energy crossing, every second, a square metre placed perpendicular to the wave.

Key formula — Intensity

I=EBμ0|\vec{I}| = \frac{|\vec{E}|\,|\vec{B}|}{\mu_0} Time average of a harmonic wave: I=E022cμ0\langle |\vec{I}|\rangle = \frac{E_0^2}{2\,c\,\mu_0}

The factor 1/21/2 in the average comes from the average of cos2\cos^2 over a period (which equals 1/21/2): the instantaneous intensity oscillates, but what a sensor measures is its mean value. Using B0=E0/c|B_0| = E_0/c the average can also be rewritten as I=12ε0cE02\langle I\rangle = \tfrac{1}{2}\varepsilon_0 c\,E_0^2, a very convenient form for problems.

Since intensity is proportional to E02E_0^2, doubling the amplitude of the field quadruples the energy carried: it is the same quadratic dependence that governs all waves. For an isotropic point source, the intensity decreases as 1/r21/r^2 with distance, because the same power is spread over spheres of growing surface area 4πr24\pi r^2.

Prad=Ic\ev{P_\text{rad} = \frac{|\vec{I}|}{c}}

Esempio — Una vela solare

Light carries not only energy but also momentum: striking a surface, it pushes it. The pressure exerted by an electromagnetic wave is:

Radiation pressure

Prad=Ic\ev{P_\text{rad} = \frac{|\vec{I}|}{c}}

This formula holds for a surface that absorbs all the radiation. If instead the surface reflects it completely, the momentum changes sign rather than vanishing, and the pressure doubles: Prad=2I/cP_\text{rad} = 2|\vec{I}|/c. Microscopically: photons carry momentum p=E/cp = E/c, and transferring it (or reversing it) generates a force on the surface.

Example — A solar sail

With I=1,4  kW/m2|\vec{I}| = 1{,}4\;\text{kW/m}^2 (the solar irradiance at Earth’s orbit), the radiation pressure is Prad=140031084,7106  PaP_\text{rad} = \frac{1400}{3\cdot 10^8} \approx 4{,}7\cdot 10^{-6}\;\text{Pa} A sail of 100  m2100\;\text{m}^2 receives a force of just 4,71044{,}7\cdot 10^{-4} N: minuscule, but constant and requiring no fuel. The principle is used in real space missions such as the IKAROS probe (2010) and LightSail (2019).

The radiation pressure equals the energy density of the wave (for an absorber): a deep link between energy carried and thrust exerted. On an astronomical scale it is responsible for the tail of comets, always pointing away from the Sun.
