A cycle is a sequence of reversible transformations that brings the gas back to its initial state: it is the basis of every heat engine. Since the gas returns exactly to where it started, the state functions do not change over a complete loop, and this simply constrains the energy exchanged. This section sets out the general properties of a cycle and reviews the named cycles behind real engines.
- orario : il ciclo è un motore (produce lavoro);

A cycle is a sequence of reversible transformations that brings the gas back to its initial state. It is the basic structure of every heat engine: the gas is compressed, heated, made to expand and cooled, and in the end returns exactly to its starting state, ready to repeat the loop.
The fact that the gas returns to its starting point has an immediate consequence for the state functions, which depend only on the state and not on the path: over a complete cycle their change is zero.
Properties of a cycle
In a complete cycle:
This last relation follows from the first law: if the internal energy does not change over the loop, then all the net heat absorbed by the gas is returned as net work. The net work of the cycle is read geometrically as the area enclosed by the closed curve in the - diagram, and its sign depends on the direction of travel:
- clockwise : the cycle is an engine (produces work);
- anticlockwise : the cycle is a refrigerator or a heat pump (absorbs work).

| Ciclo | Processi | Applicazione |
|---|---|---|
| Carnot | 2 isoterme + 2 adiabatiche | termodinamica ideale |
| Otto | 2 isocore + 2 adiabatiche | motore a benzina |
| Brayton-Joule | 2 isobare + 2 adiabatiche | turbina a gas, jet |
| Diesel | 1 isobara + 1 isocora + 2 adiab. | motore diesel |

Combining the four fundamental transformations into closed sequences gives the cycles that lie behind real machines. Each cycle is named after whoever studied it or the machine that realises it, and is characterised by the recipe of processes that make it up.
| Cycle | Processes | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Carnot | 2 isothermals + 2 adiabatics | ideal thermodynamics |
| Otto | 2 isochorics + 2 adiabatics | petrol engine |
| Brayton-Joule | 2 isobarics + 2 adiabatics | gas turbine, jet |
| Diesel | 1 isobaric + 1 isochoric + 2 adiab. | diesel engine |
The Carnot cycle is the ideal reference cycle, against which every other engine is measured. The other three correspond to real engines: the Otto cycle to the petrol engine, the Brayton-Joule cycle to gas turbines and jet engines, the Diesel cycle to the engine of the same name. The difference between them lies in how combustion takes place — at constant volume (Otto), at constant pressure (Brayton), or in a combination of the two (Diesel).
The three named cycles in the - diagram: Otto (2 isochorics + 2 adiabatics), Brayton-Joule (2 isobarics + 2 adiabatics), Diesel (1 isobaric + 1 isochoric + 2 adiabatics).
