There exists a vector quantity, the magnetic field , such that in the presence of a magnet (or a current) other magnets (or moving charges) experience forces. It is the magnetic analogue of the electric field : it describes, point by point, how space is disposed to exert magnetic forces.
Principle — The magnetic field
In the presence of a magnet or a current, other moving charges experience a force described by the vector field . Its magnitude is measured in tesla (T).
The unit of measurement of the magnetic field is the tesla (T). Analysing the Lorentz force dimensionally gives the equivalence in base units:
The tesla is a “large” unit: the Earth’s magnetic field at the surface is about , a common fridge magnet a few millitesla, while the superconducting magnets of an MRI scanner reach –.
Alongside there is a fundamental constant, the magnetic permeability of free space , the magnetic analogue of in electrostatics:
The relation that unifies electricity and magnetism
The electric and magnetic constants are not independent: their product fixes the speed of light. This is the first clue that light, electricity and magnetism are the same phenomenon, as will become clear with Maxwell’s equations.

| Campo elettrico | Campo magnetico | |
|---|---|---|
| Costante | , | |
| Sorgente puntuale | carica () | “carica” magnetica (N/S) |
| Monopoli | esistono (elettroni, protoni…) | non esistono! |
| Linee di campo | aperte () | sempre chiuse |
| Gauss (flusso) | (sempre) | |

Many concepts of the magnetic field are obtained from those of the electric field through systematic substitutions. Keeping this column-by-column comparison in mind is the most effective conceptual guide for finding one’s way around magnetism: where electrostatics had and charge , magnetism has and charges in motion.
| Electric field | Magnetic field | |
|---|---|---|
| Constant | , | |
| Point source | charge () | magnetic “charge” (N/S) |
| Monopoles | exist (electrons, protons…) | do not exist! |
| Field lines | open () | always closed |
| Gauss (flux) | (always) | |
| Force on charge |
The analogies are deep but not complete, and it is precisely where they break down that the most interesting physics hides. Two differences stand out above all. The first: the electric force acts on any charge, at rest or in motion, whereas the magnetic force acts only on moving charges and in a direction perpendicular to the velocity. The second, even more radical, is the absence of magnetic monopoles: there is no isolated “magnetic charge” comparable to the electron. From this absence it follows that the lines of are always closed and that the flux of through any closed surface is zero.

The crucial difference between the electric field and the magnetic field is the absence of magnetic monopoles. In electrostatics a positive charge can exist on its own, separate from a negative one; in magnetism this never happens.
Magnetic monopoles do not exist
In nature isolated magnetic charges are never found. Every magnet always has two poles, North (N) and South (S): if you split a magnet in half you do not get “half N” and “half S” separately, but two smaller magnets, each with its own N and S.
Splitting a magnet does not separate the poles: it duplicates them. However finely you keep cutting, you always get complete dipoles, never a single pole.
Splitting a magnet gives two complete magnets, not two isolated monopoles.
The mathematical consequence is clear-cut: the flux of through any closed surface is always zero. Every line that enters a volume also leaves it, because there are no magnetic “sources” inside for them to terminate on.
Zero magnetic flux
This is the magnetic analogue of Gauss’s theorem, but with the enclosed charge always zero. This law will become one of Maxwell’s four equations.
