Problem
Explain, with a concrete example, the difference between average speed and instantaneous speed. Then explain why a car stopped at a traffic light has zero acceleration but can still be subject to non-zero forces.
Solution
Average speed and instantaneous speed. The average speed over a time interval is the ratio between the total displacement and the duration of the interval:
It describes the overall behaviour of the motion, without saying anything about what happens instant by instant. Instantaneous speed, on the other hand, is the value that the average speed tends to as the time interval becomes vanishingly small:
and expresses how fast the motion is at a precise instant.
Concrete example. A car covers in : its average speed is . This does not mean the car always travelled at : on motorway stretches the speedometer (which shows instantaneous speed) may have read , while stuck in traffic or at toll booths the same speedometer read . The average summarises the whole journey; the instantaneous value captures a single moment.
Car stopped at a traffic light. A stationary car has constant speed (equal to zero) and therefore zero acceleration, because acceleration measures the change in speed over time. Zero acceleration does not, however, imply the absence of forces: it merely means that the resultant of the forces is zero. The car is in fact acted on by the weight force downwards and the normal reaction of the road surface upwards, equal and opposite; their vector sum is zero. It is balanced forces that produce zero acceleration, not the absence of forces.

Problem
Car A passes a green traffic light with constant velocity . At the same instant a car B, initially at rest at the same traffic light, sets off with constant acceleration . Determine after how much time B catches up with A and at which position. Is this a realistic situation in an urban context?
Solution
Setup. We place the origin at the traffic light and start the clock at the instant A passes and B sets off. We write the equations of motion of the two cars, measuring position along the road:
Meeting condition. B catches up with A when the two positions coincide, :
The solutions are (the starting instant, when they are side by side at the traffic light) and the physically interesting solution:

Discussion of realism. At the moment of overtaking, B’s velocity is , that is . An acceleration of sustained for is unrealistic in a city: no ordinary car sustains such an acceleration for that long, and in any case in a built-up area is well beyond the speed limits. The constant-acceleration model therefore only holds for the first few instants.

Soluzione
(a) FALSO.

Problem
True or false, justifying the answer: (a) a body in free fall has variable acceleration; (b) two bodies dropped from different heights reach the ground with the same velocity; (c) in a rectilinear motion, if the velocity is positive and the acceleration negative, the body is decelerating; (d) if in a – graph the line has zero slope, the body is at rest.
Solution
(a) FALSE. In free fall the only force is weight, and the acceleration is that of gravity , which near the Earth’s surface is constant (in magnitude, direction and sense). What grows during the fall is the velocity, not the acceleration. Free fall is indeed the typical example of uniformly accelerated motion.
(b) FALSE. The velocity with which a body reaches the ground depends on the drop height, according to . A body dropped from a greater height has more room to accelerate and therefore arrives with a greater velocity. Only if the heights were equal would the final velocities coincide.
(c) TRUE. Decelerating means that the magnitude of the velocity decreases over time. This happens when velocity and acceleration have opposite sense: if and , the acceleration tends to reduce the velocity, which therefore decreases. The body is indeed slowing down.
(d) FALSE. In a – graph the slope of the line represents the acceleration. Zero slope means zero acceleration, i.e. constant velocity, not necessarily zero velocity. The body can perfectly well move at a constant velocity different from zero: it is at rest only in the particular case where that constant equals zero.

- incertezza sull’altezza : la posizione esatta di partenza e di arrivo della biglia è difficile da fissare al millimetro;
- tempo di reazione delle fotocellule e loro allineamento, che introducono un piccolo errore sistematico sul tempo;
- attrito dell’aria, che rallenta leggermente la caduta e tende a far sottostimare (effetto comunque trascurabile per una biglia densa su appena );

Problem
In the lab you drop a marble from a height of and measure with a photogate timer a fall time . Estimate the experimental value of and compare it with the standard value, discussing the possible sources of error.
Solution
Model. The marble starts from rest and falls freely: the motion is uniformly accelerated with zero initial velocity. The equation of motion for the fall is therefore:
Finding . Isolating the acceleration due to gravity:
Comparison. The value obtained coincides, within experimental uncertainty, with the standard value : the measurement is excellent.
Sources of error. The main ones are:
- uncertainty on the height : the exact starting and ending position of the marble is hard to fix to the millimetre;
- reaction time of the photogates and their alignment, which introduce a small systematic error on the time;
- air resistance, which slightly slows the fall and tends to underestimate (an effect that is nonetheless negligible for a dense marble over just );
- any non-zero initial velocity if the marble is not released gently.
Since depends on the square of the time, a small error on is amplified: it is worth repeating the measurement several times and averaging.

Chi arriva prima a distanza molto grande?
A distanza molto grande.

Problem
Two buses. A bus is stopped at a traffic light; it sets off at the instant an identical bus whizzes past it at constant velocity . The first bus accelerates uniformly with while the second carries on unchanged. Between the two, which is ahead right after departure? Which arrives first at a very large distance? Is there an instant at which the two are side by side again? Discuss qualitatively, without calculations.
Solution
It helps to reason about the two equations of motion, with the origin at the traffic light and time starting from the instant of the overtaking: the accelerating bus advances according to , the one at constant velocity according to .
Right after departure. For small times the term (which grows as the square of time) is negligible compared with (which grows linearly). Indeed, the first bus starts from zero velocity and needs time to pick up speed. So right away the second bus is ahead, the one that was already travelling at .
At a very large distance. As time passes, the quadratic term prevails over the linear one: the accelerating bus keeps increasing its own velocity and inevitably ends up overtaking the other. In the long run the first bus arrives first, the one that accelerates.
Instant of being side by side. Since at the start the second is ahead and later the first is ahead, by continuity there must exist an instant at which the two are side by side again. Setting , i.e. , gives (besides ) the instant:
at which the first bus catches up with the second. From that moment on it stays permanently in the lead.

Metodo 1 — scomposizione in figure elementari.

Problem
The graph in the figure shows the velocity of a car as a function of time. Determine the distance covered in the first by calculating the area under the curve.
Solution
Key idea. In a velocity-time graph, the distance travelled is numerically equal to the area between the curve and the time axis. So it suffices to calculate the area of the coloured region.
Reading the graph. The velocity starts at , grows linearly up to at instant , stays constant at until , then decreases linearly back to at . The figure is a trapezium.
Method 1 — decomposition into elementary shapes. A rising triangle, a central rectangle and a falling triangle:
Method 2 — area of the trapezium. Longer base , shorter base (the constant-velocity stretch), height :
The two methods agree, as they must.
Note: the average velocity over the whole interval is , i.e. the height of the rectangle of equal area and base .

Quale ?
- “velocità iniziale positiva” all’istante iniziale la curva sale con pendenza netta e positiva;
- “decelera uniformemente” la pendenza diminuisce in modo regolare (la curva è concava verso il basso);
È esattamente una decelerazione uniforme fino all’arresto. Corretto.
- C — retta con pendenza costante: velocità costante, nessuna decelerazione. Scartato.
Verifica algebrica.

Problem
Which ? A car decelerates uniformly until it stops, starting from a positive initial velocity. Which of the graphs below represents its motion? (Epstein 2002)
Solution
The key is the slope. In a position-time graph, the slope of the curve is the instantaneous velocity. Let’s translate the text into conditions on the slope:
- “positive initial velocity” at the initial instant the curve rises with a net, positive slope;
- “decelerates uniformly” the slope decreases steadily (the curve is concave down);
- “until it stops” at the end the slope goes to zero, i.e. the curve becomes horizontal.
Analysis of the three graphs.
- A — parabola with increasing slope (concave up): represents a motion that is accelerating, not slowing down. Discarded.
- B — parabola that starts steep and flattens out until it becomes horizontal: the slope (the velocity) starts large and decreases to zero. This is exactly a uniform deceleration to a stop. Correct.
- C — straight line with constant slope: constant velocity, no deceleration. Discarded.
Algebraic check. With and constant the equation of motion is : a downward-concave parabola whose tangent becomes horizontal at the stopping instant . Exactly the behaviour of B.

Un ciclista percorre tre tratti consecutivi, come in figura: a velocità costante in , poi accelerando uniformemente in , poi di nuovo a velocità costante in . Calcola la velocità media sull’intero percorso e stima la velocità massima raggiunta.
Soluzione

Problem
A cyclist covers three consecutive legs, as in the figure: at constant velocity in , then accelerating uniformly in , then again at constant velocity in . Calculate the average velocity over the whole route and estimate the maximum velocity reached.
Solution
Average velocity over the whole route. The average velocity is, by definition, the total distance divided by the total time. It is not the average of the velocities of the individual legs.
Estimate of the maximum velocity. The instantaneous velocity is highest in the middle leg, the one in which the cyclist accelerates: it starts from the velocity of the first leg and grows up to the peak value, reached at the end of the acceleration. Let’s compute the reference velocities of the constant-velocity legs:
In the accelerated leg the velocity climbs above these cruising values before settling back to the third leg’s regime: the peak sits a little above them, with a reasonable estimate of
This is an estimate: the precise figure would require knowing the instant-by-instant velocity profile in the middle leg, whereas here we only have the total distance and time of each leg.

Problem
A car covers the first half of a trip at and the second half at . What is the average velocity over the whole trip? Explain why the answer is not the arithmetic mean of the two velocities.
Solution
Correct definition. The average velocity is the total distance divided by the total time, not the average of the two velocities. The difference arises because the car spends more time on the slow leg than on the fast one, so the low velocity “weighs” more.
Setup. Let be the total length of the trip: each half measures . The times of the two legs are
Average velocity.
The distance cancels: the result does not depend on the length of the trip. We recognise the harmonic mean of the two velocities:
Why not the arithmetic mean. The arithmetic mean would be correct only if the car travelled for equal time intervals at the two velocities. Here instead the legs have equal length, and at it takes more time than at : the slow leg occupies a larger fraction of the trip, so the true average velocity () is shifted towards the low value and turns out lower than the arithmetic mean.

Motiva.
Soluzione
Distinzione di partenza. Bisogna tenere separati due concetti:
- la velocità media dipende solo da spazio totale e tempo totale, cioè dagli estremi del viaggio;

Problem
Two cyclists start from the same point, travel the same road and arrive at the same instant at the same finish. Can we conclude that they had the same instantaneous velocity at every moment? And the same average velocity? Justify.
Solution
Starting distinction. Two concepts must be kept separate:
- the average velocity depends only on the total distance and total time, i.e. on the endpoints of the trip;
- the instantaneous velocity describes the motion at each single instant and can vary freely along the way.
Same average velocity: yes. Both cyclists start from the same point and arrive at the same finish (same displacement ) taking the same time (same , because they start and arrive together). Therefore
is identical for both. The average velocity is necessarily the same.
Same instantaneous velocity: no. Having the same imposes nothing on how the distance is covered instant by instant. One cyclist may start slowly and accelerate at the end, the other sprint immediately and then slow down: completely different velocity profiles can still produce the same displacement in the same time. Indeed, if the profiles differ, at some points one will be faster and at others slower, and in general they will overtake each other more than once.
Conclusion.
A useful remark still holds: since the two average velocities coincide, there is at least one instant at which the instantaneous velocities are equal (the curves must cross), but this does not mean they are equal “at every moment”.

Stima:
- (a) la velocità media tra e ;
- (b) l’istante in cui la velocità istantanea è nulla;

Problem
The graph in the figure shows the position of a body. Estimate:
- (a) the average velocity between and ;
- (b) the instant at which the instantaneous velocity is zero;
- (c) the instant at which the velocity is maximum in magnitude.
Solution
How to read an graph. The instantaneous velocity is the slope (the inclination of the tangent) to the curve; the average velocity between two instants is the slope of the chord joining the two corresponding points.
(a) Average velocity between and . We read the two positions off the graph: and, at the maximum of the curve, . Hence
(b) Instant of zero velocity. The instantaneous velocity is zero where the tangent is horizontal, i.e. where the curve reaches its maximum. From the graph this occurs at
Before this instant the body moves forward ( increases), afterwards it goes back ( decreases): the turning point is the maximum.
(c) Instant of maximum velocity in magnitude. The velocity is maximum in magnitude where the curve is steepest. In the rising phase the slope is maximum around (); after the maximum, in the return phase, the descent grows steadily steeper towards the end of the interval. The largest slope in magnitude over the whole graph is therefore near
Method note. All these values are estimates read off the graph: the aim of the exercise is to learn to derive velocities (slopes) from a position-time curve, not to obtain exact figures.

Vero o falso?
Soluzione
(a) Vero.

Problem
True or false?
- (a) A body can have zero velocity and non-zero acceleration at a certain instant.
- (b) If the acceleration is constant, the velocity must be constant.
- (c) A body moving with uniform rectilinear motion has an average velocity different from its instantaneous velocity.
- (d) In the – graph, the area under the curve represents the distance travelled.
Solution
(a) True. Velocity and acceleration are independent quantities at the same instant: acceleration tells us how the velocity is changing, not what it is worth. The classic example is a stone thrown upward: at the highest point of the trajectory , but the acceleration is still downward, and it is precisely this that makes the stone start falling back down.
(b) False. Constant acceleration means the velocity changes at a constant rate, not that it stays fixed. If is constant and non-zero, the velocity varies linearly with time, . The velocity is constant only in the special case .
(c) False. In uniform rectilinear motion the instantaneous velocity is the same at every instant; consequently its average over any interval coincides with that value. Average and instantaneous velocity are equal. (This is the only case in which this always holds.)
(d) True. In a velocity-time graph, the area between the curve and the time axis is numerically equal to the distance travelled: for a leg at constant velocity the area is the rectangle , and in general summing infinitesimal areas gives the total distance.

Soluzione
Hai ragione tu.

You throw a stone upwards with velocity . A friend claims that, while the stone is rising, the acceleration points upwards because it “follows the motion”. Are you right or is he? Discuss by drawing the velocity and the acceleration at three instants: rising, top, falling.
Solution
You are right. Neglecting air, only gravity acts on the stone: the acceleration is , constant, of magnitude and always directed downwards, regardless of whether the stone is rising, momentarily at rest at the top, or falling.
The friend’s mistake. He confuses the direction of the velocity with that of the acceleration. The acceleration does not “follow the motion”: it indicates how the velocity changes. While rising the velocity points upwards but is decreasing, so its variation (and hence the acceleration) points downwards.
The three instants.
- Rising: upwards and decreasing; downwards (opposite to ): the stone decelerates.
- Top: for an instant; still downwards, . It is precisely this non-zero acceleration that makes the stone start moving downwards again.
- Falling: downwards and increasing; downwards (in the same direction as ): the stone accelerates.

A supermarket shelf is above the ground. A customer accidentally drops a box of pasta. How much time does he have (at most) to try to catch it before it hits the ground? How much distance will his hand cover if it moves down with an average velocity of ? Is it enough?
Solution
The box starts from rest and falls freely from a height . The relationship between height and fall time is that of uniformly accelerated motion with acceleration :
Substituting the data, with :
This is the maximum time available to intervene. If the hand moves down with average velocity , in the same interval it covers:

Problem
Difference between velocity and acceleration. A ball falls from rest. After its velocity is , after . Explain in five lines in what sense “the velocity changes” and what the acceleration represents.
Solution
The velocity tells us how fast the ball is moving at a given instant: after it is , after it is . The fact that this number differs from one instant to the next means that “the velocity changes”.
The acceleration measures precisely the rate at which the velocity changes, that is, the ratio between the change in velocity and the time taken to produce it:

Distance in the first and second second. A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly. Discuss in five lines how much distance it covers in the first second and how much in the second second, and why it covers more even though the acceleration is identical.
Solution
Starting from rest with constant acceleration , the distance covered from the initial instant is:
In the first second (from to ) the car covers:
By it has instead covered . So in the second second (from to ) it covers only the difference:
In the second interval the car covers , that is three times the distance of the first. The acceleration is identical, but in the second second the car already starts with a non-zero velocity (the one built up in the first second): the average velocity of the interval is larger, so the distance covered increases.

Caduta nell’aria.

Problem
Falling through air. A paper ball and a metal ball of the same size fall from . Explain in five lines why they reach the ground at different times, despite being the same for both.
Solution
The acceleration of gravity really is the same for both: if they fell in a vacuum, without air, they would reach the ground at exactly the same instant, with time:
In air, however, air resistance also acts, a force that opposes the motion and grows with velocity. The two balls have the same size (same frontal area), so they experience similar resistance at the same velocity; but the paper ball has a much smaller mass.
For the paper ball, air resistance soon becomes comparable to its weight: it quickly reaches a terminal velocity and its fall slows down. The metal ball, much heavier, “feels” the air very little and keeps accelerating almost as it would in a vacuum.
This is why the metal ball reaches the ground first: not because it has a different , but because air resistance slows the light paper ball down much more.

Problem
Sci-fi physics: reversible time. A projectile in the air moves to the right at . Discuss in five lines how the trajectory would change if time were reversed. What stays the same?
Solution
Reversing time means substituting in the equations of motion. The position depends on only through (the gravity term) and (the initial-velocity term), so the projectile retraces the same parabola in space, but in the opposite direction: it starts from the landing point and returns to the launch point.
The velocities change sign (): where the projectile was rising before, it now descends, and the horizontal motion is to the left instead of to the right. The projectile launched at to the right becomes a projectile arriving at from the right.
What stays the same is the acceleration: always points downward, because it depends on and the square does not change under the reversal. This is precisely what makes the trajectory an identical parabola: gravity keeps curving the motion downward in both directions of time.

Paracadute aperto. Spiega in cinque righe il motivo, identificando le forze in gioco.
Soluzione

Problem
Open parachute. A skydiver in free fall reaches a terminal velocity and then remains at constant velocity. Explain in five lines why, identifying the forces at play.
Solution
Two opposite vertical forces act on the skydiver. Pointing downward is the weight force , constant and independent of velocity. Pointing upward is air resistance, which grows as velocity increases (for fast bodies in air it is well approximated by a law ).
At first, when is small, resistance is negligible: the weight prevails and the skydiver accelerates. As velocity increases, air resistance grows until it equals the weight.
When , the resultant force is zero, so the acceleration is zero: the velocity no longer changes. This constant value is the terminal velocity. Opening the parachute, by increasing the surface area, suddenly increases air resistance and lowers the terminal velocity to a value safe for landing.

Problem
Average velocity and instantaneous velocity. A car goes from Rome to Florence in hours, covering . Explain in five lines the difference between average velocity and instantaneous velocity, and what exactly a speed camera measures.
Solution
Average velocity is the ratio between the distance covered and the time taken, without caring about what happens in between:
This does not mean the car travelled at the whole time: on the motorway it will have touched , at the toll booths it will have stopped. The average flattens all these variations into a single number.
Instantaneous velocity, instead, is the value at a single instant, defined as the derivative of position, : it is what the speedometer shows moment by moment.
A speed camera measures precisely the instantaneous velocity (or nearly so: it is estimated over a very short stretch) at the point where it is installed. This is why you can respect the average speed for the whole journey and still get fined: what counts is the velocity at the instant and point of detection, not the average of the entire route.

Fase 1 (–).

Problem
Graph reading: in three phases. An graph has three phases: a rising linear ramp for , then flat for , then a falling linear ramp for . Sketch qualitatively.
Solution
The key is that in an graph velocity is the slope: where rises is positive, where is flat is zero, where falls is negative. Let’s analyse the three phases.
Phase 1 (–). The rising ramp has constant, positive slope: the velocity is constant and positive. From the graph rises by units in , so (the exact value depends on the scale; what matters is that it is constant and positive).
Phase 2 (–). The flat stretch has zero slope: the object is stationary, .
Phase 3 (–). The falling ramp has constant, negative slope, equal in magnitude to that of phase 1: the velocity is constant and negative, (the object moves back).
Resulting graph: a positive step for the first , then zero for the next , then a symmetric negative step for the last . A step function, with vertical jumps at the points where the graph changes slope abruptly.

Lettura grafico: in un impatto.

Problem
Graph reading: in an impact. An graph during a collision has the shape of a triangular pulse, with and duration . Calculate the change in velocity of the struck object.
Solution
Principle. In an graph the change in velocity is the area under the curve:
Area of the triangle. The pulse is a triangle with base equal to the duration and height :
Although the peak acceleration is enormous (, over ), the very short duration of the impact means the velocity changes by only : what matters for the velocity change is the area, not the height of the peak.

Problem
Fermi estimate: diving speed. Estimate the speed of a diver launching from a height of , neglecting air resistance. Compare it with the speed of a car in the city.
Solution
Model. Neglecting air resistance, the dive is free fall from rest: all the potential energy converts into kinetic energy. The impact speed depends only on the height via the time-independent relation:
Numerical estimate. With and :
Comparison. That’s about : the same speed as a car speeding through the city. This is why a bad dive from , belly-flopping onto the water, is equivalent to a small road accident. The free-fall-only estimate works well for the first few metres; at much greater heights air resistance would start to matter.

Problem
Fermi estimate: reaction time on the road. Estimate the distance covered by a car at during the reaction time of an average driver ().
Solution
Model. During the reaction time the driver has not yet touched the brake: the car continues at constant speed. The distance is therefore simply speed times time:
Speed conversion. Recalling :
Numerical estimate. With a typical reaction time :
Twenty-five metres covered before even starting to brake: more than two buses in a row. That is the distance lost purely to human reflexes, to which the actual braking distance must then be added. This is why speed weighs so heavily on road safety.

Since they move towards each other, the relative closing speed is the sum: .
Reaction phase (). During this second no one is braking yet: the two cars keep a constant speed and close the gap by

Sfida: salto sull’autobus.

Problem
Challenge: catching the bus. A bus starts from rest with . You are behind the door and start running. What is the minimum average speed needed to catch it before the interception window closes? (Hint: impose a non-negative discriminant in the interception equation.)
Solution
Setup. We place the origin at the bus door at the starting instant. The door moves with uniformly accelerated motion, while you run at average speed starting behind:
Interception condition. You reach the door when :
Existence of the solution. For a real meeting instant to exist, the discriminant of this second-degree equation in must be non-negative:
Minimum speed. The limiting case gives the smallest average speed with which you can still catch the bus (at a single instant of tangency):
At a lower speed () there is no instant at which you reach the door: the bus, accelerating, escapes you forever. Almost is a sustained running pace: catching the bus on the fly is harder than it looks.
