Newton’s law establishes that any two masses attract each other with a force proportional to the product of the masses and inversely proportional to the square of their distance. It is always an attractive force, and truly universal. This section states the formula and shows how, near the Earth’s surface, it reduces to the familiar F=mgF = mg.

Note

Between any two bodies possessing mass there exists a mutual attraction. This is the intuition that Newton made quantitative: the force does not depend on the nature of the bodies, only on their masses and the distance separating them. The larger the masses, the stronger the attraction; the further apart the bodies, the weaker it becomes, decreasing with the square of the distance.

Newton's law of universal gravitation

Between two bodies of mass m1m_1 and m2m_2 at distance dd (measured between their centres) there exists an attractive force directed along the line joining their centres, of magnitude: F=Gm1m2d2\ev{F = G\,\frac{m_1\,m_2}{d^2}} where G=6,671011  Nm2/kg2G = 6{,}67\cdot 10^{-11}\;\text{N\,m}^2/\text{kg}^2 is the universal gravitational constant.

Note

GG was measured by Cavendish in 1798 using a torsion balance.

Two features distinguish this force. It is always attractive, unlike Coulomb’s law, where charges of the same sign repel each other: masses never repel. And it is universal, meaning it holds between any pair of objects possessing mass, from an apple to a galaxy. The two forces that the masses exchange are equal and opposite, in accordance with Newton’s third law.

The gravitational force between two masses is always attractive, directed along the line joining their centres. The two forces F12\vec{F}_{12} and F21\vec{F}_{21} are equal and opposite (Newton’s third law).

The tiny value of GG explains why we do not notice the attraction between everyday objects: two people standing close together attract each other with a wholly negligible force. Gravity only becomes dominant when at least one astronomical mass is involved, such as that of a planet or a star.

F=GMTmRT2=mGMTRT2gF = G\frac{M_T\,m}{R_T^2} = m\underbrace{\frac{GM_T}{R_T^2}}_{g}

Sostituendo MT=61024  kgM_T = 6\cdot 10^{24}\;\text{kg} e RT=6,4106  mR_T = 6{,}4\cdot 10^6\;\text{m}:

g=6,67101161024(6,4106)2=9,78  m/s2g = \frac{6{,}67\cdot 10^{-11}\cdot 6\cdot 10^{24}}{(6{,}4\cdot 10^6)^2} = 9{,}78\;\text{m/s}^2

The law of universal gravitation does not replace the formula Fpeso=mgF_\text{peso} = mg we already know: it contains it. Near the Earth’s surface, the force with which the Earth attracts a body of mass mm is precisely its weight, and from this we obtain the deeper meaning of gg: it is not a mysterious constant, but the gravitational field produced by the Earth at its surface.

Writing the universal law for a body resting on the Earth (mass MTM_T, radius RTR_T):

F=GMTmRT2=mGMTRT2gF = G\frac{M_T\,m}{R_T^2} = m\underbrace{\frac{GM_T}{R_T^2}}_{g}

The factor multiplying mm is exactly gg. Substituting MT=61024  kgM_T = 6\cdot 10^{24}\;\text{kg} and RT=6,4106  mR_T = 6{,}4\cdot 10^6\;\text{m}:

g=6,67101161024(6,4106)2=9,78  m/s2g = \frac{6{,}67\cdot 10^{-11}\cdot 6\cdot 10^{24}}{(6{,}4\cdot 10^6)^2} = 9{,}78\;\text{m/s}^2

The experimentally measured value is 9,81  m/s29{,}81\;\text{m/s}^2; the small difference is due to the Earth’s rotation and its not-quite-spherical shape.

Key formula

g=GMTRT2\ev{g = \frac{GM_T}{R_T^2}} The acceleration due to gravity at the surface depends on the planet’s MTM_T and RTR_T: on another celestial body it takes a different value.

This relation has a remarkable practical consequence: weighing a body at a planet’s surface and measuring its radius lets us work out the planet’s own mass. This is the gateway to gravitation as a tool for cosmic measurement.
