The great insight of kinetic theory is that temperature is average kinetic energy: the macroscopic quantity we read on the thermometer directly measures the microscopic agitation of the molecules. This section derives the formula for internal energy as a function of temperature and degrees of freedom, explains why monatomic and diatomic gases have different formulae, and closes with a historical curiosity about the Celsius scale.

Formula chiave — Costanti

kB=1,381023  J/Kk_B = 1{,}38\cdot 10^{-23}\;\text{J/K} R=NAkB=8,31  J/(mol\cdotpK)R = N_A\,k_B = 8{,}31\;\text{J/(mol·K)} Monoatomico: f=3f = 3; biatomico: f=5f = 5.

We have seen that in an ideal gas the internal energy is entirely kinetic. Kinetic theory takes a further step and links it directly to temperature: the more the molecules agitate, the higher the temperature. The quantitative result is one of the chapter’s fundamental formulae.

Law — Internal energy of an ideal gas

Eint=f2NkBT=f2nRT\ev{E_{\text{int}} = \frac{f}{2}\,N\,k_B\,T = \frac{f}{2}\,n\,R\,T} where ff is the number of degrees of freedom of the molecule.

The formula exists in two equivalent versions: one “per molecule” (with NN molecules and the Boltzmann constant kBk_B) and one “per mole” (with nn moles and the gas constant RR). The bridge between the two is the relation R=NAkBR = N_A\,k_B, i.e. the gas constant is simply the Boltzmann constant multiplied by Avogadro’s number.

Key formula — Constants

kB=1,381023  J/Kk_B = 1{,}38\cdot 10^{-23}\;\text{J/K} R=NAkB=8,31  J/(mol\cdotpK)R = N_A\,k_B = 8{,}31\;\text{J/(mol·K)} Monatomic: f=3f = 3; diatomic: f=5f = 5.

The physical intuition is powerful: temperature is not a substance or a fluid, but a measure of agitation. Doubling the absolute temperature of an ideal gas means doubling its internal energy, i.e. the total kinetic energy of its molecules. Absolute zero (T=0T = 0 K) corresponds, in this classical model, to zero agitation: the molecules would be at rest.

The formula Eint=f2nRTE_{\text{int}} = \frac{f}{2}nRT contains the number ff of degrees of freedom: the independent ways in which a molecule can move and store energy. The equipartition principle assigns to each degree of freedom an average energy of 12kBT\frac{1}{2}k_B T per molecule: counting degrees of freedom therefore means counting the “drawers” in which thermal energy can be stored.

  • Monatomic gas (f=3f = 3): the molecule is a single atom, which can only translate along the three axes xx, yy, zz. Three translations, so f=3f = 3 and Eint=32nRTE_\text{int} = \frac{3}{2}nRT.
  • Diatomic gas (f=5f = 5): the molecule is like a small dumbbell. Besides the three translations, it can rotate about two axes perpendicular to the molecular axis (rotation about the axis itself has negligible moment of inertia and does not count). Three translations plus two rotations, so f=5f = 5 and Eint=52nRTE_\text{int} = \frac{5}{2}nRT.

Further detail — Degrees of freedom "switch on"

At very high temperatures (above a thousand kelvin or so) the vibrational degrees of freedom of the two atoms along the molecular axis also become active, and ff increases further. But at ordinary temperatures quantum mechanics “freezes” them, and f=3f = 3 (monatomic) or f=5f = 5 (diatomic) is enough. The fact that the vibrational modes remain switched off at room temperature was one of the first historical clues that classical physics is not enough to explain specific heats.

Anders Celsius (1701–1744) invented the centigrade scale that bears his name, but in his original thermometer the boiling point of water was marked as 0° and the freezing point as 100°100°: exactly the opposite of how we use it today. It was only after his death that the scale was inverted into the form we know.

Before standardisation, the fixed points proposed by various thermometer makers included the melting point of butter, the temperature of deep caves, and even “the hottest water a hand held still can bear”. The disorder was such that in 1776 the Royal Society of London had to appoint a committee, chaired by Cavendish, to establish definitive reference points (Oxford Handbook 2014, pp. 473–474).

Curiosity

The choice of fixed points for a temperature scale has never been “obvious”: it is the outcome of a long negotiation between experimental practicality and reproducibility. Modern physics has since anchored the absolute scale (kelvin) to fundamental constants, making it independent of any particular substance.
