With the correction of the displacement current, the four equations take on their final form: the heart of classical electromagnetism. This section collects them, rewrites them in vacuum (where the revolutionary idea of the self-sustaining wave is born) and outlines their differential form with the symbol \nabla.

ΦE(sup. chiusa)=Qintε0(Gauss E)\Phi_E(\text{sup. chiusa}) = \frac{Q_\text{int}}{\varepsilon_0} \qquad\text{(Gauss } \vec{E}\text{)} ΦB(sup. chiusa)=0(Gauss B)\Phi_B(\text{sup. chiusa}) = 0 \qquad\text{(Gauss } \vec{B}\text{)} ΓE=dΦBdt(Faraday-Neumann)\Gamma_E = -\frac{d\Phi_B}{dt} \qquad\text{(Faraday-Neumann)} ΓB=μ0iconc+ε0μ0dΦEdt(Ampeˋre-Maxwell)\Gamma_B = \mu_0\,i_\text{conc} + \varepsilon_0\mu_0\,\frac{d\Phi_E}{dt} \qquad\text{(Ampère-Maxwell)}

Here is the final form of the four equations, the complete summary of all of classical electromagnetism:

Maxwell's equations (integral form)

ΦE(closed surf.)=Qintε0(Gauss E)\Phi_E(\text{closed surf.}) = \frac{Q_\text{int}}{\varepsilon_0} \qquad\text{(Gauss } \vec{E}\text{)} ΦB(closed surf.)=0(Gauss B)\Phi_B(\text{closed surf.}) = 0 \qquad\text{(Gauss } \vec{B}\text{)} ΓE=dΦBdt(Faraday-Neumann)\Gamma_E = -\frac{d\Phi_B}{dt} \qquad\text{(Faraday-Neumann)} ΓB=μ0ilink+ε0μ0dΦEdt(Ampeˋre-Maxwell)\Gamma_B = \mu_0\,i_\text{link} + \varepsilon_0\mu_0\,\frac{d\Phi_E}{dt} \qquad\text{(Ampère-Maxwell)}

Let us read them as a coherent whole:

  • Gauss for E\vec{E}: electric charges are sources (or sinks) of the electric field; the lines of E\vec{E} begin and end on charges.
  • Gauss for B\vec{B}: no magnetic monopoles exist; the lines of B\vec{B} are always closed.
  • Faraday-Neumann: a varying magnetic flux generates a circulating electric field.
  • Ampère-Maxwell: both currents of charges and a varying electric flux generate a circulating magnetic field.

Modern technology

Maxwell’s equations underpin all electromagnetic technology: radio, Wi-Fi, lasers, electric motors, optical fibres, microwave ovens. Four lines that govern an entire world of devices.

The first two equations speak of fluxes (the “source” aspect), the last two of circulations (the “vortex” aspect). The symmetry between the last two — a changing field generates the other — is what makes the electromagnetic wave possible.

ΦE=0ΦB=0ΓE=dΦBdtΓB=ε0μ0dΦEdt\begin{aligned} \Phi_E &= 0 & \Phi_B &= 0 \\ \Gamma_E &= -\frac{d\Phi_B}{dt} & \Gamma_B &= \varepsilon_0\mu_0\,\frac{d\Phi_E}{dt} \end{aligned}

In a region of space with no charges and no currents (Qint=0Q_\text{int} = 0 and ilink=0i_\text{link} = 0), the four Maxwell equations simplify considerably:

ΦE=0ΦB=0ΓE=dΦBdtΓB=ε0μ0dΦEdt\begin{aligned} \Phi_E &= 0 & \Phi_B &= 0 \\ \Gamma_E &= -\frac{d\Phi_B}{dt} & \Gamma_B &= \varepsilon_0\mu_0\,\frac{d\Phi_E}{dt} \end{aligned}

In vacuum, the two circulation equations become almost symmetric: a varying E\vec{E} produces B\vec{B}, and a varying B\vec{B} produces E\vec{E}. From this reciprocity a revolutionary idea is born.

Principle — Existence of electromagnetic waves

In vacuum, a field E\vec{E} that changes in time generates a field B\vec{B}, which in turn, by changing, generates a new E\vec{E}, and so on indefinitely. This self-sustaining chain of inductions is an electromagnetic wave that propagates through vacuum, with no need for any material medium.

This is the turning point of the whole chapter: the fields no longer need charges or currents to sustain them. Once triggered, the disturbance of the fields detaches from the source and travels on its own. What remains to be understood is how fast it travels — and the answer, surprisingly, coincides with the speed of light.

E=ρε0,B=0\nabla\cdot\vec{E} = \frac{\rho}{\varepsilon_0}, \qquad \nabla\cdot\vec{B} = 0

E=Bt,B=μ0j+μ0ε0Et\nabla\wedge\vec{E} = -\frac{\partial\vec{B}}{\partial t}, \qquad \nabla\wedge\vec{B} = \mu_0\,\vec{j} + \mu_0\varepsilon_0\,\frac{\partial\vec{E}}{\partial t}

  • F\nabla\cdot\vec{F} (divergenza) misura quanto un campo “parte da quel punto”, cioè le sue sorgenti puntuali;
  • F\nabla\wedge\vec{F} (rotore) misura quanto un campo “ruota attorno a quel punto”, cioè i suoi vortici locali.

Contesto storico

The four Maxwell equations written so far are in integral form: they speak of fluxes through surfaces and circulations along closed curves. There is an equivalent, more compact form that rewrites them at every point in space, without integrals:

E=ρε0,B=0\nabla\cdot\vec{E} = \frac{\rho}{\varepsilon_0}, \qquad \nabla\cdot\vec{B} = 0

E=Bt,B=μ0j+μ0ε0Et\nabla\wedge\vec{E} = -\frac{\partial\vec{B}}{\partial t}, \qquad \nabla\wedge\vec{B} = \mu_0\,\vec{j} + \mu_0\varepsilon_0\,\frac{\partial\vec{E}}{\partial t}

The symbol \nabla (nabla) is a “vector of partial derivatives” (/x,  /y,  /z)\left(\partial/\partial x,\;\partial/\partial y,\;\partial/\partial z\right):

  • F\nabla\cdot\vec{F} (divergence) measures how much a field “originates from that point”, i.e. its point sources;
  • F\nabla\wedge\vec{F} (curl) measures how much a field “rotates around that point”, i.e. its local vortices.

Historical context

The differential form is the one in which Maxwell wrote his 1865 treatise (using Hamilton’s quaternion notation); the modern vector form is due to Oliver Heaviside, in the 1880s. For numerical applications — every simulation of antennas, microwaves, gravitational waves — it is the form used in practice. For sixth-form purposes it is enough to know that it exists and is fully equivalent to the integral form (Mazzoldi 2008).
