The ideal gas model makes two strong assumptions: point-like molecules with no interactions. It works very well for rarefied gases, but fails close to liquefaction. In 1873 Van der Waals proposed a simple correction, with just two constants, able to qualitatively describe the liquid-gas transition and the critical point. This section presents the equation and its P-V diagram.

: attrazione pressione effettiva minore. : ingombro volume effettivo minore.
In sintesi

The ideal gas model makes two strong assumptions: the molecules are point-like (zero volume) and do not interact with each other (zero force at a distance). It is an excellent approximation for rarefied gases far from condensation, but fails close to the liquefaction point. In 1873 Johannes van der Waals proposed a simple correction, able to qualitatively describe the liquid-gas transition; the equation earned him the Nobel Prize in 1910.
Law — Van der Waals equation
For moles of real gas at temperature in a volume :
The two constants and are characteristic of the gas and correct the two ideal assumptions:
- (in J·m/mol) measures the mutual attraction between molecules. Near the walls, molecules are held back by their companions in the interior “bulk”, which reduces the pressure actually measured. The term is added to the measured to reconstruct the ideal pressure.
- (in m/mol) is the excluded volume per mole: molecules are not point-like, they take up space. The volume actually available for motion is , not .
Key formula — Van der Waals
: attraction lower effective pressure. : bulk lower effective volume.
In the limit of a rarefied gas ( and ) both corrections become negligible and the equation reduces to : the ideal model re-emerges as a special case.
Example — Estimate of for nitrogen
For N the experimental value is m/mol. Dividing by Avogadro’s number gives the “effective” volume of a molecule: The diameter estimated from ( nm) coincides with that found from viscosity and the mean free path. When independent methods give the same answer, atoms stop being a conjecture.
In summary
Real gas = ideal gas + two corrections. (molecular attraction) and (excluded volume) are enough to qualitatively capture the liquid-gas transition. Van der Waals is the “bridge” between the ideal gas and condensed matter.

- per ogni isoterma è monotona decrescente, simile a un’iperbole un po’ deformata: il gas si può comprimere indefinitamente senza che compaia una fase liquida;
- per l’isoterma ha un tratto a forma di S con un massimo e un minimo locali: nella regione fra essi una singola pressione corrisponde a tre volumi possibili, ed è la firma della coesistenza fra liquido e vapore;

On the plane the Van der Waals isotherms (curves at fixed ) look qualitatively different above and below a characteristic temperature , called the critical temperature:
- for every isotherm is monotonically decreasing, similar to a slightly deformed hyperbola: the gas can be compressed indefinitely without a liquid phase appearing;
- for the isotherm has an S-shaped section with a local maximum and minimum: in the region between them a single pressure corresponds to three possible volumes, and this is the signature of coexistence between liquid and vapour;
- exactly at the isotherm has a horizontal-tangent inflection point at the critical point : this is where liquid and gas become indistinguishable.
For CO, K C: at lower temperatures (a domestic refrigerator) a moderate pressure is enough to liquefy it. Above C, however, no pressure liquefies it: it becomes a supercritical fluid, now used industrially as a solvent for decaffeinating coffee and extracting oil from seeds.
Van der Waals isotherms in the plane. Above the curves are monotonic; at a horizontal-tangent inflection appears at the critical point; below the S-shaped section appears, signalling liquid-vapour coexistence.
The S shape is not a flaw
The S-shaped section of the isotherms is a manifestation of intermolecular forces, the same ones that hold a liquid together. In practice nature “cuts” the S with a horizontal segment (Maxwell construction) along which liquid and vapour coexist. Van der Waals is the bridge between the ideal gas and condensed matter.
