Vero o falso, motivando ogni risposta:

Problem
True or false, justifying each answer:
- The first law holds for both reversible and irreversible processes.
- In a free expansion into a vacuum the gas always cools down.
- At constant volume, all the heat supplied to the gas turns into internal energy.
- The work done by the atmosphere on an expanding gas is positive.
Solution
1) TRUE. The first law is conservation of energy: it does not require reversibility. It holds for any process, including irreversible ones in which the intermediate states are not equilibrium states.
2) FALSE. In free expansion the container is isolated () and the gas expands into a vacuum (), so constant. The gas does not cool down.
3) TRUE. At constant volume , so the first law gives : all the heat becomes internal energy.
4) FALSE. If the gas expands, it compresses the atmosphere: , so . In the gas’s balance, the atmosphere appears with negative work.

- (c) Il processo rapido è adiabatico o isotermo? E quello lento? Giustifica confrontando i tempi caratteristici di compressione e di scambio termico.
Soluzione

Problem
When quickly inflating a bicycle tyre, the pump heats up noticeably.
- (a) Why does it heat up? Where does the energy come from?
- (b) If you pumped the same air very slowly, would the pump heat up just as much?
- (c) Is the fast process adiabatic or isothermal? What about the slow one? Justify by comparing the characteristic times of compression and heat exchange.
Solution
(a) Why it heats up. Fast compression is approximately adiabatic: there is no time for heat to flow out of the gas. By the first law with : The work the muscles do on the gas is converted entirely into internal energy, i.e. into a temperature rise. The energy comes from the muscular work of whoever is pumping.
(b) Slow pumping. No, the pump does not heat up noticeably. Compressing slowly, the gas has plenty of time to release heat to the surroundings as it is compressed: the temperature stays practically constant (an isothermal process) and the energy of the work leaves as heat instead of accumulating.
(c) Comparing the times. Let be the compression time and the characteristic time for heat exchange with the surroundings:
- Fast: → heat has no time to leave → adiabatic.
- Slow: → the gas stays in thermal equilibrium with the surroundings → isothermal.
It is the same process (the same compression) giving opposite thermal outcomes depending on its speed (Povey 2015).

Come evolve ?
Soluzione
(a) T sale.

Problem
A domestic fridge is placed in the middle of a perfectly isolated room and switched on.
- (a) In the first few hours, does the room temperature fall, rise, or stay constant? Justify.
- (b) After a few hours the door is opened and left wide open. How does evolve? Hint: apply energy conservation to a control volume enclosing the whole room.
- (c) Estimate the temperature increase after hours, assuming a room of and an average dissipated power of .
Solution
(a) T rises. The room is thermally isolated, but energy continuously enters through the mains socket. A fridge does not “destroy” heat: it pumps it from inside the compartment to the back (the condensers). Since everything stays inside the isolated room, the electrical energy absorbed ends up entirely as heat in the room’s air. So rises.
(b) T keeps rising, more steeply. With the door open the motor works harder: it tries to pump heat from one environment into the same environment, an impossible task that keeps it running continuously. More electrical work absorbed → more heat dissipated → the curve becomes steeper, never decreasing.
(c) Estimate. Apply energy conservation to the “room” control volume. Energy input in hours: Mass of air (): With the specific heat of air at constant volume : This is an “air only” estimate: accounting for walls and furniture that absorb heat, the real increase would be smaller.

Stessa temperatura, flussi termici diversi → sensazioni diverse.

Problem
Placing a hand on a metal block at it feels “cold”; placing it on a book, also at , it feels “less cold”. Explain the phenomenon, carefully distinguishing temperature from rate of heat transfer.
Solution
Same temperature. Both objects are in equilibrium with the same room, so they have exactly the same temperature . The perceived difference therefore cannot depend on temperature.
Different conductivity. Metal has a much higher thermal conductivity than wood (or paper). When the hand — warmer, at — touches the metal, it draws heat from the skin much faster, cooling it quickly. Wood, a poor conductor, draws heat away slowly and the skin stays close to its own temperature.
What we perceive. The sensation of “cold” is generated by the skin’s receptors and depends on the rate at which heat leaves the hand, not on the temperature of the object touched. Same temperature, different heat flows → different sensations.

Soluzione
(a) VERO.

- (b) In an adiabatic process implies .
- (c) In an isochoric process the work is .
- (d) The specific heat at constant pressure is greater than that at constant volume.
- (e) Temperature is a form of energy.
Solution
(a) TRUE. For an ideal gas the internal energy depends only on temperature: . In an isothermal process does not change, so .
(b) FALSE. In an adiabatic process , but the first law gives : if the gas does or receives work, its internal energy changes and so does the temperature. In general (the gas cools when expanding, heats up when compressed).
(c) TRUE. At constant volume there is no displacement of the system boundary, so .
(d) TRUE. Mayer’s relation holds: : at constant pressure part of the heat supplied is used to do expansion work, so more is needed for the same temperature rise.
(e) FALSE. Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of the molecules, but it is not itself a quantity of energy: it is an intensive quantity, whereas energy is extensive. Doubling the amount of gas does not double the temperature, but it does double the energy.

- Primo plateau → fusione (solido → liquido).
- Secondo tratto inclinato → riscaldamento del liquido.
- Secondo plateau → vaporizzazione (liquido → gas).
- Ultimo tratto inclinato → riscaldamento del vapore.
Calori specifici (tratti inclinati).

Problem
The graph shows the heating of of a substance receiving constant power . Identify the solid, liquid and gas phases. Estimate the specific heats of the three phases and the latent heats of fusion and vaporisation.
Solution
Reading the graph. The sloped stretches are heating periods of a single phase: the substance absorbs heat and the temperature rises. The horizontal plateaus are phase transitions: the temperature stays constant while all the absorbed heat serves as latent heat to change state.
- First sloped stretch → heating of the solid.
- First plateau → fusion (solid → liquid).
- Second sloped stretch → heating of the liquid.
- Second plateau → vaporisation (liquid → gas).
- Last sloped stretch → heating of the vapour.
Specific heats (sloped stretches). On the stretch where the substance heats by in a time , the heat supplied is , so: with and . For equal power, a shallower slope (more time needed for the same ) corresponds to a higher specific heat.
Latent heats (plateaus). On the plateau of duration : The first plateau gives the latent heat of fusion, the second that of vaporisation (usually much longer, so a greater ).

Problem
«Heat is a form of energy.» Explain in five lines why this statement, taken literally, is misleading. What is the correct formulation?
Solution
Why it is misleading. The statement suggests that a body «contains» heat as it contains a substance. This is not the case: heat is not stored anywhere. Heat is a way of transferring energy across the boundary of a system, through disordered collisions between molecules at different temperatures. What a body possesses and stores is internal energy .
Heat and work are flows. Both heat and work are flows of energy crossing the boundary, not contents of the system. It makes no sense to ask «how much heat is in a body»: it only makes sense to ask how much heat was exchanged in a process.
Correct formulation. The first law relates the change in internal energy to the two flows:

Pendenza dell’adiabatica. In una trasformazione adiabatica reversibile vale . Derivando: , quindi
Confronto.

Solution
Slope of the isotherm. For an ideal gas at constant temperature . Differentiating: , so the slope in the plane is
Slope of the adiabat. In a reversible adiabatic process . Differentiating: , so
Comparison. Since , at the same point (same and ) the adiabat has a greater slope in magnitude: it drops more steeply.
Physical interpretation. In the adiabatic expansion the gas receives no heat (): the energy to do work comes from the internal energy, so the gas cools and the pressure falls more. In the isothermal process, instead, the gas absorbs heat that compensates for the work, keeps constant and the pressure falls less.

Problem
In a closed cycle in the plane (because is a state variable). What does the area enclosed by the cycle represent? Distinguish the clockwise case from the anticlockwise one.
Solution
Meaning of the area. In a cycle the gas returns to the initial state, so . The net work done in one full loop is the cyclic integral
which geometrically is the area enclosed by the curve in the plane.
Clockwise cycle. The expansion stretch (at higher pressure) lies above the compression stretch: the work done by the gas exceeds that done on it, so . The system produces useful work: it is a heat engine.
Anticlockwise cycle. The compression happens at a higher pressure than the expansion: net work is done on the gas, so . The system absorbs work to transfer heat: it is a refrigerator or a heat pump.

Isobara.

Problem
In an isochoric process the volume is constant and the gas does no work: how does it then exchange energy? Compare with an isobaric process and derive Mayer’s relation.

Isochoric process. With constant the gas does no work: . The first law gives
so all the heat absorbed increases the internal energy (and the temperature). Energy enters only as heat, not as work.
Isobaric process. At constant pressure the gas expands, so . The first law gives

Problem
What would it mean if energy were not conserved during thermodynamic processes? Discuss in five lines with a concrete example of “what would be possible”.
Solution
What would collapse. The first law states : internal energy changes only through heat exchanged or work done. If it collapsed, work “from nothing” could exist.
Consequence. Perpetual motion machines of the first kind would be possible: devices that produce work without consuming fuel or any form of energy.
Concrete example. An engine that runs forever and also powers an entire city, without ever burning fuel or recharging. Power stations and batteries would become useless.
Experimental reality. No experiment has ever shown at constant internal energy: every supposed perpetual motion machine has turned out to be flawed or fraudulent (Simonyi 2012). Conservation of energy is among the best-verified laws of physics.

Percorso 1 (isoterma). Essendo , il primo principio dà :
Percorso 2 (adiabatica + isocora + adiabatica).

Problem
One mole of gas is taken from state A to B by two paths: (1) an isotherm; (2) two reversible adiabatics with an isochore in between that brings it back to . Discuss the total , and in the two cases.
Solution
Internal energy: a state variable. depends only on the state (for an ideal gas, only on ), not on the path. If A and B have the same temperature, then:
IDENTICAL along both paths.
Heat and work: path-dependent.
Path 1 (isotherm). Since , the first law gives :
Path 2 (adiabatic + isochoric + adiabatic). In the two adiabatics but the work (at the expense of internal energy); in the isochore and . The individual contributions of and differ from those of path 1.
Conclusion. The final state is the same and coincides, but the “tally” of heat and work depends on the route taken: and are not state variables.

Soluzione
Compressione rapida ≈ adiabatica.
Confronto col caso lento.

Problem
When you quickly compress the air in a bicycle pump, the pump heats up. Explain in five lines in terms of work, internal energy and heat-exchange timescales.
Solution
Rapid compression ≈ adiabatic. The compression happens in a fraction of a second: the gas has no time to exchange heat with the surroundings, so .
First law. With the first law becomes . Work is done ON the gas (), so : internal energy increases, temperature rises and the pump heats up.
Comparison with the slow case. If you compressed it slowly, the gas would gradually release heat to the surroundings (an almost isothermal process) and would stay at room temperature: no noticeable heating.
This is the same principle behind ignition in Diesel engines (Povey 2015).

All’alba il Sole riscalda aria e gocce.

Problem
Early-morning fog often dissolves as the Sun warms the air. Explain in five lines the energy balance in terms of latent heat and the liquid-to-vapour transition.
Solution
What fog is. It is a suspension of tiny liquid water droplets in the air. It makes the atmosphere opaque because the droplets scatter light.
Role of the Sun. At dawn the Sun warms the air and the droplets. To turn from liquid into vapour, each droplet must absorb the latent heat of vaporisation: energy that reaches it from solar radiation.
Effect. The droplets EVAPORATE (liquid→vapour transition), the droplet density drops and visibility increases: the fog “dissolves”. The water does not disappear, it turns into invisible vapour.
Energy balance. The solar energy is split between evaporating the droplets and heating the air:

Problem
Same initial state and final state , with and . Path 1 goes through (high isobar then isochore down); path 2 goes through (isochore down then low isobar). Compare the work done along the two paths and comment on why is instead the same.
Solution
The work is the area under the isobaric leg (the isochores do no work, ).
Path 1. The expansion happens along the high-pressure isobar , from to :
Path 2. The expansion happens along the low-pressure isobar :
Comparison. Since and , path 1 does more work:
Why is the same. Internal energy is a state variable: it depends only on the initial state A and the final state B, not on the route followed. Both paths start at and end at , so is IDENTICAL. Only the split between heat and work differs.

Soluzione
Legge adiabatica in temperatura. Per una trasformazione adiabatica reversibile vale , quindi:
Calcolo dell’esponenziale.
Temperatura finale.

Problem
A bicycle pump compresses of air adiabatically from 1 atm to 4 atm (ratio ), starting from , with . Calculate the final temperature and explain the “warmth” felt at the nozzle.
Solution
Adiabatic law in temperature. For a reversible adiabatic process , so:
Computing the exponential.
Final temperature.
The “warmth”. The compression is too fast for the gas to lose heat to the surroundings (): the work done on the air converts entirely into internal energy, and the temperature rises sharply. That is why, when you pump quickly, the pump nozzle heats up.
