Nell’incidente di Chernobyl del 1986 vennero rilasciati 70 kg\sim 70\ \text{kg} di cesio-137 (T1/2=30,2T_{1/2} = 30{,}2 anni).

  • (a) Stima l’attività totale iniziale rilasciata.

Problem

In the 1986 Chernobyl accident, 70 kg\sim 70\ \text{kg} of caesium-137 (T1/2=30,2T_{1/2} = 30{,}2 years) were released.

  • (a) Estimate the total initial activity released.
  • (b) Estimate the residual activity in 2024, i.e. after 3838 years.
  • (c) After how many years would the activity fall to a thousandth of the initial value?

Error in the textbook's answer key

The textbook’s answer key gives "224 TBq224\ \text{TBq}" and "94 TBq94\ \text{TBq}": this is a unit error. The calculation gives A02,24×1017 BqA_0 \approx 2{,}24\times 10^{17}\ \text{Bq}, i.e. 224 PBq224\ \text{PBq} (petabecquerel, 101510^{15}), not 224 TBq224\ \text{TBq} (terabecquerel, 101210^{12}). The discrepancy is a factor of 10001000: the digits "224224" and "9494" are correct, but the right prefix is P, not T.

Explain why a simple sheet of paper is enough to stop the α\alphas, whereas the γ\gammas pass through several centimetres of lead. What is needed instead to stop the β\betas? Justify your answer based on the physical nature of the three types of radiation.

Penetrating power of the three types of radiation: the α\alphas are stopped by paper, the β\betas by a few mm of aluminium, the γ\gammas only by thicknesses of lead.

Problem

A detector measures the activity of a radioactive sample at regular intervals, obtaining the table below.

tt (hours)0022446610102020

  • (a) Verify that the data follow an exponential decay law.
  • (b) Determine the half-life T1/2T_{1/2} and identify the isotope between technetium-99m (T1/26,0 hT_{1/2} \approx 6{,}0\ \text{h}) and iodine-123 (T1/213 hT_{1/2} \approx 13\ \text{h}).

Note on the data

The values in the table strictly give T1/24 hT_{1/2}\approx 4\ \text{h}, not 6 h6\ \text{h} as stated in the textbook’s answer key. The numerical data are therefore slightly inconsistent with the nominal value for technetium-99m (6 h6\ \text{h}): although technetium-99m remains the closer isotope of the two options, the half-life extracted from the data does not exactly match the tabulated value.
