Vero o falso?

Problem
True or false? “A photon of very intense red light extracts electrons from a metal with work function , provided the intensity is sufficient.” Justify your answer.
Solution
False. In the photoelectric effect each electron absorbs only one photon: what matters is the energy of the single quantum , not the intensity (which is just the number of photons per second).
A photon of red light () has energy
Since , no electron is extracted, however intense the light is: increasing the intensity only increases the number of photons, each still too low in energy. Light of sufficient frequency (blue/UV) with is needed.

Problem
Explain in your own words why the stability of the atom is incompatible with the classical Rutherford model, and how the quantisation of angular momentum (Bohr) or the uncertainty principle save the situation.
Solution
The classical problem. In the Rutherford model the electron orbits the nucleus like a planet. But a charge in circular motion is accelerated, and an accelerated charge radiates electromagnetic waves (Maxwell’s electrodynamics). Continuously losing energy, the electron should spiral into the nucleus in an extremely short time, of the order of . The classical atom would be unstable and would collapse: a contradiction with the evidence that matter exists and is stable.
Bohr’s solution. Bohr postulates that only orbits with quantised angular momentum are allowed,
On these orbits the electron does not radiate: there is a ground state () of minimum energy below which it cannot descend. The atom emits only by jumping between discrete levels, not continuously.
The modern reading (uncertainty). Even more deeply: confining the electron to a small region imposes, by Heisenberg’s relation, a momentum and hence a kinetic energy that grows as decreases. “Falling into the nucleus” () would cost infinite kinetic energy: there is a trade-off between potential energy (which favours getting closer) and confinement kinetic energy (which opposes it), and the minimum gives precisely the size of the atom ().

Problem
In the polariser experiment it is observed that single photons either pass through or are absorbed, while for an intense beam Malus’s law holds. Explain how the two descriptions connect, and why the outgoing photon “is not the same” as the incident one.
Solution
The single photon is probabilistic. A photon polarised at an angle with respect to the polariser’s axis cannot pass “halfway”: it either passes through entirely or is absorbed. Quantum mechanics prescribes that it passes with probability
The intense beam recovers Malus. With identical photons, on average pass through. The intensity is proportional to the number of transmitted photons:
The macroscopic Malus law emerges as the statistical average over the huge number of individual all-or-nothing events. It is a fine example of how continuous classical behaviour is the average of discrete quantum events.
Why it is “not the same” photon. The outgoing photon is polarised along the polariser’s axis, no longer at : the measurement has projected (collapsed) its state. It has lost all memory of the initial polarisation — a second polariser parallel to the first would now let it pass with probability 1. The quantum state has changed: in this sense it is not “the same” photon as before.

Passo 2 — Energia cinetica tipica.
Passo 3 — In elettronvolt.

An electron is confined to a region of size (of the order of the size of an atom). Estimate, using Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, the minimum uncertainty on its momentum and the corresponding typical kinetic energy in eV.

Problem
Why X-rays are not “just intense light”. A friend suggests: “To take an X-ray you’d just need a very bright lamp, no need for X-ray equipment.” What’s wrong with this idea? Explain what determines a photon’s ability to penetrate tissue and ionise molecules, and why intensity is not the only quantity that matters. Cite the photoelectric effect to justify your answer.
Solution
The friend’s mistake. He confuses intensity (how many photons per second) with the energy of a single photon (). A very bright lamp emits huge numbers of visible photons, each with an energy of only .
What really matters. The ability to penetrate tissue and ionise molecules (stripping electrons, breaking bonds) depends on the energy of a single photon, not on how many there are. The photoelectric effect demonstrates this: an electron absorbs only one photon; if is below the ionisation threshold, the electron is not ejected no matter how many photons arrive. Increasing the lamp’s intensity only adds more photons that are still too weak.
X-rays. They have –, i.e. –: ten thousand to a hundred thousand times more energetic than visible light. Only quanta this energetic pass through soft tissue, get selectively absorbed by bone, and can ionise — exactly what’s needed (and also what makes them dangerous). No intensity of visible light can substitute for them.

Doppia fenditura.
- le frange di interferenza delle due fenditure, rapidamente oscillanti (massimi e minimi regolari);

Problem
Double slit. Coherent light passes through a double slit and forms an interference pattern on a screen. Which graph represents the intensity on the screen? (Epstein 2002)
Solution
The answer is graph B.
Why. The double-slit pattern is the product of two effects:
- the interference fringes of the two slits, oscillating rapidly (regular maxima and minima);
- the diffraction envelope of each single slit, which modulates the amplitude, giving a dominant central peak with progressively lower side lobes.
Graph B shows exactly this: oscillating fringes enclosed within a bell-shaped envelope, with a marked central maximum — the typical signature of double-slit interference.
Why not the others.
- A is a cosine of constant amplitude: this would be the interference of two ideal point sources (infinitely narrow slits), with no diffraction envelope. Not realistic.
- C is a step function: the distribution we would get with classical particles (two slit “shadows” added together), without interference. This is exactly what is observed if a detector is placed to determine which slit the light passes through.

Problem
In a double-slit experiment, electrons are sent one at a time. The final screen still shows the interference pattern. What happens if a detector is placed near the slits to “see” which slit the electron passes through?
Solution
Without a detector. Even sending one electron at a time, after many electrons the interference pattern emerges on the screen. Each electron passes through “both” slits as a probability wave and interferes with itself: this is the heart of wave-particle duality.
With the detector (path measurement). If a detector establishes which slit the electron passes through, the interference pattern disappears: two simple blobs appear on the screen (the sum of the two slits, as with classical particles).
Why. Determining the path means measuring the system: this destroys the coherence/superposition between the two paths (collapse of the state). You cannot have both the “which way” information and the interference pattern at the same time — this is Bohr’s complementarity, closely tied to the uncertainty principle: measuring the position at the slit introduces an uncertainty in the momentum that washes out the fringes.

Problem
The ordinary matter we see is made of atoms formed from nuclei and electrons. Why don’t they collapse? Why doesn’t the electron fall into the nucleus, as it should according to classical physics? Argue in terms of uncertainty and discrete energy levels.
Solution
The classical paradox. Classically, the electron, attracted by the nucleus, should radiate energy and spiral inward: the atom would collapse in . This does not happen: atoms are stable and have a well-defined size ().
The uncertainty argument. Confining the electron within a region requires, by Heisenberg, , and hence a confinement kinetic energy
which grows as shrinks. The total energy is the sum of this term (positive, increasing as we get closer) and the attractive potential energy (negative). This trade-off has a minimum at : “falling into the nucleus” () would cost infinite kinetic energy, so it is energetically forbidden.
Discrete levels. Quantisation fixes a ground state () of minimum energy: below it there are no allowed states. The electron cannot lose energy continuously — it can only jump between discrete levels by emitting photons, until it reaches the ground state, where it remains stable.
It is the same reason, on a larger scale (with the Pauli principle added), why ordinary matter is “rigid” and occupies volume instead of imploding.

Commento. Problem

Solution
Step 1 — From radius to volume. Atomic volume scales as the cube of the radius, and the radius as :
Step 2 — Halving condition. Call the new constant. Imposing means

Comment. It remains science fiction because is a universal constant: it is not a parameter that can be “lowered” locally on one object while leaving the rest of the universe unchanged.
Soluzione
Il paradosso classico. Secondo l’elettromagnetismo classico una carica accelerata irraggia onde elettromagnetiche. L’elettrone in orbita circolare è accelerato (accelerazione centripeta), quindi perderebbe energia in modo continuo e cadrebbe sul nucleo a spirale in circa s.

Problem
An electron orbiting the nucleus, treated as a classical accelerated charge, should radiate energy and fall onto the nucleus in an extremely short time. Why is the atom actually stable? Argue using the quantisation of levels and de Broglie’s standing-wave condition.
Solution
The classical paradox. According to classical electromagnetism an accelerated charge radiates electromagnetic waves. The electron on a circular orbit is accelerated (centripetal acceleration), so it would continuously lose energy and spiral into the nucleus in about s. Matter would be unstable: a contradiction with the very existence of atoms.
The wave solution. The electron has an associated de Broglie wave of wavelength . For the wave on a closed orbit not to cancel itself through destructive interference, it must close in phase: the circumference must contain a whole number of wavelengths.
Substituting gives Bohr’s angular-momentum quantisation:
Why the atom is stable. Only the radii (and hence energies) that satisfy this condition give standing waves: these are the allowed stationary states. In a stationary state the electron does not radiate, exactly as a standing wave on a string carries no net energy. There is also a state of minimum energy (ground state, ): below it no standing waves are possible, so the electron cannot “fall” any further. The atom is stable because the wave nature of the electron imposes discrete energy levels with an insurmountable minimum.

Classical probability (dice). In a dice roll, probability is epistemic: it arises from our ignorance. In principle, knowing exactly the forces, velocities and friction, we could predict the outcome. Probabilities cover hidden but well-defined variables: the die already has a determined outcome that we simply do not know.
Quantum probability. Quantum probability is of a different, fundamental nature. Before measurement, a quantity (for example a photon’s polarisation or a spin) does not possess a predetermined value: it is genuinely undefined. The outcome is not “already written and hidden”, but is generated by the act of measurement (collapse of the wave function).
Bell’s role. One might object: perhaps there still exist hidden variables that make everything predetermined, as with the die. Bell’s inequalities (1964) turn this question into an experiment. Every local hidden-variable theory must respect an inequality between the correlations measured on pairs of particles at different angles. Quantum mechanics instead predicts correlations that violate that inequality.
Experimental verdict. Experiments (Aspect 1982, and the “loophole-free” tests of 2015) show violation of Bell’s inequalities, in agreement with quantum mechanics. Conclusion: quantum randomness is not like that of the die. There are no local hidden variables that predetermine outcomes; indeterminacy is an intrinsic property of nature, not a limit of our knowledge.

Problem
Electrons are sent one at a time through a double slit. On the screen, a single dot appears for each electron. Letting millions of electrons pass, an interference pattern emerges. Explain.
Solution
The dot: corpuscular aspect. Each electron is detected as a localised event, a single dot on the screen. At this instant it behaves like a particle: it arrives “all at one point”, not spread out.
The pattern: wave aspect. A single dot seems to land at a random position. But the position is not entirely free: the probability of arriving at a given point is governed by the amplitude of the de Broglie wave, which passes through both slits and interferes with itself. Where the interference is constructive the probability is high; where it is destructive it is zero.
Summary. Accumulating millions of electrons, the distribution of dots reconstructs the squared modulus of the wave, i.e. the interference fringes. The crucial point: the pattern appears even when sending one electron at a time, so each electron interferes with itself — it is not a collective effect of electrons colliding with each other.
Moral (complementarity). The electron is neither “wave” nor “particle”: it is a quantum object that shows a corpuscular aspect in detection (the dot) and a wave aspect in propagation and in the statistics of arrivals (the fringes). The wave function describes probabilities; measurement gives a point-like outcome.

Problem
Imagine Planck’s constant is multiplied by ten. Discuss at least three visible consequences on ordinary matter (de Broglie wavelengths, atomic levels, uncertainty).
Solution
With the quantum character of nature is amplified by an enormous factor. Three main consequences.
1 — De Broglie wavelengths (). They would become times larger. Increasingly massive objects would show wave effects: diffraction and interference effects, today confined to electrons and atoms, would become noticeable on a much larger scale. The boundary between the “classical” and “quantum” world would shift towards macroscopic objects.
2 — Atomic levels and sizes. The Bohr radius scales as , so it would become times larger: atoms would be huge. Binding energies scale as , so times smaller: chemical bonds would be extremely weak and solid matter unstable against ordinary thermal agitation. Spectral lines would change completely.
3 — Uncertainty (). Heisenberg’s limit would grow by times: a particle could no longer be well localised without giving it a huge momentum uncertainty. Even mesoscopic objects would have “blurred” positions, making the deterministic classical physics we use every day impossible.
Summary. Increasing does not “tweak” a detail: it rescales the entire architecture of matter. Chemistry, the stability of solids and even the distinction between micro and macro depend on the small value of in our universe.

Problem
In a universe without the Pauli exclusion principle for electrons, what would happen to the periodic table and to chemistry? Argue why solid matter as we know it would not exist.
Solution
Pauli’s role. The exclusion principle forbids two electrons from occupying the same quantum state. It is this ban that forces electrons to fill increasingly outer energy levels as the atomic number grows: hence shells and electron configurations.
Without Pauli. If electrons could all pile up in the lowest-energy state (), every atom would have all its electrons crammed into the ground level.
1 — End of the periodic table. The periodicity of chemical properties arises from the shell structure (recurring valence electrons). Without shells there would be no periods or groups: all atoms would have electrons in the same deep state, with monotonic properties and no recurrence. The periodic table would not exist.
2 — No chemistry. Chemical bonds depend on outer valence electrons and their tendency to complete shells. Without shells there is no valence, hence no bonds as we know them, no complex molecules, no biochemistry.
3 — No (stable, extended) solid matter. The rigidity and proper volume of solids largely derive from electron degeneracy pressure, a direct consequence of Pauli’s principle: electrons “repel” each other in phase space because they cannot overlap in states. Without this, matter would collapse: atoms would interpenetrate, and there would be none of the impenetrability that makes bodies solid and extended.
Summary. The Pauli principle is not a technical detail: it is the reason matter occupies volume, why distinct chemical elements exist, and why the world is made of stable structures rather than a single collapsed mass.

Problem
A photon polarised at with respect to the axis of a vertical polarizer is incident on the instrument. Discuss what happens to its polarisation, in the single event and on average over many repetitions.
Solution
Single event. The photon is not attenuated “a little”: it is indivisible. It either passes entirely or is absorbed entirely. There is no such thing as ” of a photon”. The outcome of the single event is genuinely random — not predetermined.
Probability (quantum Malus law). The probability that the photon crosses the polarizer is
Collapse. If the photon passes, its polarisation state collapses: it is no longer at , but comes out polarised exactly along the axis of the filter. The measurement has projected the state onto the axis. If it does not pass, it is absorbed (together with its energy).
Average over many repetitions. Repeating with a great many identical photons at , a fraction passes and is absorbed. The transmitted intensity is thus , recovering the classical Malus law as a statistical average of the discrete quantum events. The single photon is probabilistic; the ensemble reproduces the classical wave result.

Problem
In a double-slit experiment with electrons, if “which slit it passes through” is detected, the interference pattern disappears. Explain in terms of wave packets and position-momentum uncertainty.
Solution
Interference requires uncertainty about the path. The fringe pattern arises because the electron’s wave passes through both slits and overlaps with itself. This requires that it is not known which slit it passed through: the two “paths” remain indistinguishable and their amplitudes add coherently.
Revealing the path destroys the coherence. To determine the slit one must interact with the electron (for example by illuminating it with a photon). This position measurement (small , we know where it passed) imposes, by the uncertainty relation
an uncontrollable disturbance of the momentum (large ). This random “kick” randomly dephases the two components of the wave: the fringes blur until they disappear, leaving the simple sum of two blobs (particle-like behaviour).
Language of wave packets. A packet well localised in position (narrow in ) is, by Fourier, wide in momentum: it contains many different wavelengths and does not produce sharp fringes. An extended packet (wide in , narrow in ) has a well-defined wavelength and interferes well, but does not allow one to say “where it is”. One cannot have both: this is complementarity.
Summary. Path information (particle-like aspect) and fringe visibility (wave-like aspect) are complementary quantities: gaining one causes the loss of the other. This is not a technological limitation of the apparatus, but a fundamental property imposed by the uncertainty principle.

Problem
The emission curve of a black body at K has a peak at nm. Estimate the peak at K using Wien’s law and qualitatively describe the change in apparent colour.
Solution
Step 1 — Wien’s law. The emission peak satisfies . So the product is the same at the two temperatures:
Step 2 — Work out the new peak.
Step 3 — Apparent colour. At K the peak ( nm) is in the visible range (blue-white): the body appears bright and whitish, like the Sun. Halving the temperature to K shifts the peak to nm, beyond red, into the infrared: most of the energy is no longer visible. In the visible range only the short-wavelength tail remains, dominated by red: the body appears red-orange and much dimmer (the total power, , drops by a factor of ). This is why a heated metal goes from red to white-blue as the temperature rises.

L’energia segue

Problem
On a diagram with energy on the vertical axis you see horizontal lines at , , , eV. Explain what they represent, why they crowd together as they approach zero, and what happens above .
Solution
What they represent. Each horizontal line is an allowed energy level of the electron in the hydrogen atom, labelled by the principal quantum number . These are the only energy values the bound electron can take: intermediate energies are forbidden (quantised energy). The lowest level, at eV, is the ground state.
Why they are negative. The energy is negative because the electron is bound: energy must be supplied to remove it. The reference corresponds to the electron just freed, at rest, infinitely far from the nucleus.
Why they crowd together. The energy follows
Since decreases ever more slowly, the gaps between consecutive levels shrink as grows ( eV between and , only eV between and ). Infinitely many levels accumulate just below zero.
What happens above . At the electron reaches ionisation: it detaches from the nucleus. For the electron is free and its energy is no longer quantised: it can take any value. This region is the continuum. The transition from bound (discrete lines) to free (continuum) occurs precisely at .

Soluzione
Passo 1 — Potenza luminosa utile.

Problem
A W white LED bulb emits about as visible light (the rest as heat). Estimating an average wavelength of nm, how many photons per second does it emit?
Solution
Step 1 — Useful light power. Only of the W becomes visible light:
Step 2 — Energy of an average photon.
Step 3 — Photons per second.
Billions of billions of photons per second: the flux is so dense that light appears continuous to us, with no trace of its grainy nature. The quantisation of light manifests itself only with detectors sensitive to single photons or at extremely low intensities.

Problem
An electron is confined in an infinite potential well of width nm. Using , calculate the energy of the first level () in eV and comment on the connection with typical atomic energies.
Solution
Step 1 — Formula for the levels. For the infinite well:
with , m, kg.
Step 2 — Numerator and denominator.
Step 3 — Energy in joules and eV.
Comment. An electron confined in a region of atomic size ( nm) has a ground-level energy of a few eV, the same order as atomic binding energies (the ground state of hydrogen is eV). This is not a coincidence: confining the electron imposes, via the uncertainty principle, a minimum momentum and hence a kinetic energy on the electronvolt scale. The infinite well is the simplest model capturing quantisation: only standing waves with an integer number of half-wavelengths across the width are allowed.

Passo 3 — Ampiezza relativa. Poiché , l’ampiezza relativa in frequenza uguaglia quella in energia:
Commento.

Problem
An atom emits a photon in a time ns (mean lifetime of the excited state). Estimate the relative width of the emitted line around nm using the time-energy uncertainty relation .
Solution
Step 1 — Time-energy uncertainty. A state that lives for a finite time does not have a perfectly defined energy:
Step 2 — Photon energy.
Step 3 — Relative width. Since , the relative width in frequency equals that in energy:
Comment. The line is not infinitely thin: it has an intrinsic width (natural broadening) due to the finite lifetime of the state. The value is tiny — atomic lines are extremely sharp — but not zero. Longer-lived states (large ) give narrower lines, the principle underlying the precision of atomic clocks; short-lived states give broad lines.

Problem
Two entangled photons have correlated polarisations. Measured with parallel polarizers, they always give the same outcome. Why is this correlation not enough to conclude that the polarisation was predetermined? Argue by citing Bell’s inequalities and the Aspect experiments.
Solution
The “naive” explanation (hidden variables). The fact that two photons always give the same outcome with parallel polarizers could easily be explained by supposing that each photon carries an “instruction” fixed at the origin: an identical predetermined polarisation for the two. This is the local hidden variables hypothesis: the correlation would be like that of two gloves sent in different boxes — if one is left-handed, the other is certainly right-handed, with nothing mysterious about it.
Why the parallel case alone does not decide. With parallel polarizers both theories — quantum and hidden variables — predict perfect correlation. The two models are indistinguishable in that configuration: perfect correlation by itself neither proves nor rules out predetermination.
Bell’s idea. Bell (1964) showed that if the two photons are measured with polarizers at different angles (not only parallel), the two theories predict quantitatively different correlations. Every local hidden variable theory must satisfy an inequality (Bell / CHSH) that limits how strong the correlations can be. Quantum mechanics predicts correlations that violate that inequality for certain choices of angles.
Aspect’s verdict. Alain Aspect’s experiments (1981–1982), and later the “loophole-free” tests of 2015, measure exactly these correlations at multiple angles and find a violation of Bell’s inequalities, in agreement with the quantum prediction.
Conclusion. The observed correlation does not arise from locally predetermined polarisations: no local hidden variable theory can reproduce the data. The properties were not defined before the measurement, and the correlations between the two photons are non-local in Bell’s sense. Nature is genuinely quantum, not a hidden clockwork.
