Soluzione
(a) VERA.
Esempio: in parallelo a dà .
(d) FALSA.

Problem
State whether the following statements are true or false, giving reasons. (a) In a series circuit the current is the same in every component. (b) In a parallel circuit the potential difference is the same across every branch. (c) A larger resistance in parallel with a smaller one reduces the equivalent resistance below that of the smaller one. (d) The EMF of a cell is the potential difference measured across its terminals when it delivers maximum current.
Solution
(a) TRUE. In a series circuit there is a single path for the charge: with no nodes, the current cannot split. By conservation of charge the same flows through each component one after another.
(b) TRUE. The branches of a parallel combination share the same two end nodes; the potential difference between those two nodes is a single value, so every branch is subject to the same . The currents, on the other hand, split according to .
(c) TRUE. For two resistors in parallel Indeed, adding a parallel path offers the current an alternative route: the equivalent resistance is always smaller than the smaller of the two. Example: in parallel with gives .
(d) FALSE. The EMF is the terminal voltage on open circuit, i.e. when the delivered current is zero. Under load, the internal drop lowers the terminal voltage: . At maximum current (short circuit) the terminal voltage actually tends to zero, not to .

Soluzione

Problem
In a Wheatstone bridge the known arms are , , ; the galvanometer reads zero when the fourth arm contains the unknown resistance . Determine and explain why the value found does not depend on the bridge’s supply voltage.
Diagram: four-arm bridge (top), (bottom); galvanometer G on the diagonal, generator on the other.
Solution
Balance condition. The galvanometer reads zero when the two central nodes are at the same potential: no current flows through the galvanometer branch. At balance the two dividers (top branch – and bottom branch –) have the same ratio, i.e. the products of opposite arms are equal:
Solving for the unknown:
Why it does not depend on the voltage. At balance only the equality of the ratios between the resistances matters: the current in the galvanometer is zero for any value of . Changing the supply voltage scales all the currents in the arms by the same factor, but leaves the condition unchanged. The bridge is therefore a comparison measurement method, insensitive to the stability of the supply.

Soluzione
(a) Lunghezza.

Problem
A copper cable () of cross-section feeds a load drawing at . (a) What length of cable produces a voltage drop (about 1%)? (b) How much power is dissipated as heat in the cable at that length? Comment on the importance of adequate cross-sections in domestic wiring.
Solution
(a) Length. The allowed drop fixes the cable’s resistance: From the second law of Ohm (with ):
(b) Power dissipated in the cable (Joule heating): equivalent to .
Comment. dissipated along the cable is energy wasted as heat, and on a long or thin cable it can overheat the insulation. Since , doubling the cross-section halves both the voltage drop and the power lost: this is why domestic wiring uses larger cross-sections the higher the line current (e.g. for sockets, for lighting, larger cross-sections for ovens and water heaters).

An infinite ladder is made of identical cells: each cell has a resistance in series followed by a resistance in parallel towards the next cell. Using the self-similarity principle, write the equation satisfied by the equivalent resistance seen from the input terminals, solve it and check the sign by choosing the physically acceptable root.

Lampadine in serie e in parallelo.
Soluzione
(a) In serie: luminosità totale MINORE.

Problem
Light bulbs in series and in parallel. Two identical light bulbs of resistance are connected to an ideal battery of EMF . (a) If you put them in series, is their total brightness greater or smaller than that of a single one of them? (b) If you put them in parallel, how does the brightness of each bulb change compared to the case where only one were connected? (c) If one of the two “burns out” (open circuit), what happens in the two cases? Answer without explicit calculations, reasoning about how voltage and current are shared.
Solution
(a) In series: SMALLER total brightness. The two bulbs in series present a resistance : the current supplied is , half that of a single bulb (). The total power dissipated is i.e. half the power of a single bulb. Adding a bulb in series obstructs the current and reduces the overall light.
(b) In parallel: each EQUAL to when it is alone. Each branch of a parallel combination sees the full voltage of the ideal battery, independently of the other branch. So each bulb dissipates exactly as if it were the only one connected: the brightness of each is unchanged (however, the total current supplied by the battery doubles, and so does the overall light).
(c) If one burns out (open branch):
- In series, the single current path is interrupted: both go out (the intact bulb no longer has current flowing through it).
- In parallel, the other branch stays closed and still sees the same : the other bulb keeps lighting normally.

Soluzione
(a) UGUALE luminosità.

Problem
Two cells in parallel. You connect two identical alkaline cells, both nominally , in parallel ( terminal to terminal, terminal to terminal), and then attach the whole thing to a light bulb. (a) Does the bulb shine brighter, dimmer, or the same compared to when it is powered by a single cell? (b) How long does the parallel configuration last, compared to a single cell (for the same bulb)? (c) If one of the two cells is nearly exhausted (EMF ), what happens as soon as you close the circuit? In which direction does the current flow in the “good” cell? Answer by reasoning about internal resistance.
Solution
(a) SAME brightness. Two identical cells in parallel maintain the same EMF at the common terminals: the voltage applied to the bulb does not change, so the current and the power are the same as in the single-cell case. (In addition, the two internal resistances go in parallel, , slightly reducing the internal drop: a negligible effect with a bulb of much greater resistance.)
(b) ROUGHLY DOUBLE duration. In parallel, each cell supplies only half the bulb’s current. The total charge available is the sum of that of the two cells: for the same current drawn by the load, the configuration lasts roughly twice as long as a single cell.
(c) Rebalancing current in the exhausted cell. As soon as you close the circuit, the two cells have different EMFs ( and ) but are connected to the same terminals. The difference drives a current through the internal resistances of the two cells alone: the good cell () supplies current that partly feeds the bulb and partly enters the flat cell, partially “recharging” it. In the good cell the current leaves from the terminal (normal discharge); in the exhausted cell the current enters through the terminal (opposite to the discharge direction). The internal resistance limits this rebalancing current.

(b) Come ricavare .

Problem
Reading Ohm’s law from a graph. An ohmic resistor was characterised by varying and measuring :
The measured points (red) lie along a straight line through the origin (blue).
(a) Why must an ohmic conductor give a straight line? (b) How do you obtain from the graph? (c) If the curve bent downward for large , what would you deduce about the conductor’s behaviour (e.g. a lamp filament)? Inspired by (O’Kuma et al. 2004).
Solution
(a) Why a straight line. A conductor is ohmic when its resistance is constant (it does not depend on or ). Ohm’s law is then a linear relation between and : in the plane it is a straight line through the origin (at zero voltage the current is zero). Linearity is the experimental signature of ohmicity.
(b) How to obtain . Here is on the horizontal axis and on the vertical, so the slope of the line is and the resistance is the inverse of the slope, i.e. . From the graph the line rises by about over : (In general, if the line had , it would be : the recipe is always “resistance = inverse of the slope”.)
(c) Curve bending downward. If for large the current grows less than proportionally (curve concave downward), it means that for the same increase in the current increases less: the resistance increases. This is the behaviour of a lamp filament, which heats up through Joule heating and increases its resistivity: it is no longer ohmic and the characteristic curves.

Soluzione
(a) Resistenza equivalente.

Three lamps. An ideal battery powers three identical lamps of resistance as in the figure: lamps A and B in parallel, the group AB in parallel with C (so the three lamps are all in parallel across the battery).
Diagram: lamps A, B, C are three branches in parallel between the same two nodes, powered by the battery .
(a) Calculate the equivalent resistance. (b) If lamp B burns out (open circuit), does the brightness of A increase, decrease or stay the same? And that of C? (c) If instead C burns out, what happens to A and B? Answer first by reasoning, then check with calculations.
Solution
(a) Equivalent resistance. The three identical lamps are in parallel: Total current delivered: .
(b) and (c) Reasoning. The battery is ideal: it maintains across the parallel combination whatever happens to the other branches. Each lamp always sees the same , independently of the others. So:
- If B burns out: A and C stay the same (they still see ); only the total current delivered decreases.
- If C burns out: A and B stay the same, for the same reason.
In a parallel combination on an ideal source, switching off one branch does not affect the others.
Check with calculations. Each lamp, subjected to : The current in each branch depends only on and the of that branch, not on the others: removing one, the others keep and hence the same brightness. The total current instead drops from to .

A: corrente costante. B: decadimento esponenziale. C: crescita esponenziale.
(a) Identifica la risposta giusta. (b) Cosa rappresenta il grafico escluso? (c) Come cambia il grafico giusto se raddoppia? E se raddoppia ?
Soluzione
(a) Risposta: grafico B (decadimento esponenziale).
(b) I grafici esclusi.

Problem
Which graph for an RC circuit? A resistor and an initially uncharged capacitor are connected to a battery at instant . Among the following graphs, which one correctly represents the current in the circuit?
A: constant current. B: exponential decay. C: exponential growth.
(a) Identify the correct answer. (b) What does the excluded graph represent? (c) How does the correct graph change if doubles? And if doubles?
Solution
(a) Answer: graph B (exponential decay). At the capacitor is uncharged and behaves like a short circuit: the current starts at its maximum . As charges, its voltage grows and opposes the battery, so the current decreases. At steady state the capacitor is charged () and the current vanishes. The trend is i.e. an exponential decay from to : exactly graph B.
(b) The excluded graphs.
- A (constant): would be the current in a purely resistive circuit (without a capacitor), or the steady-state case of an inductor — not a charging RC circuit.
- C (exponential growth): instead describes the charge or the voltage on the capacitor, which starts at zero and saturates. It is the quantity complementary to the current, not the current itself.
(c) Effect of and . The time constant is .
- If doubles: doubles (slower decay) and the initial current halves: the curve starts lower and falls more gently.
- If doubles: doubles (slower decay) but the initial current does not change: the curve starts from the same point but falls more slowly.

Caso ideale (perdite trascurabili).

Problem
Boiling time (Povey 2015, §9.7). An electric kettle draws power from the mains and takes a time to bring a litre of water to the boil, starting from . Another model, of a different brand, has internal resistance half that of the first, but is connected to the same mains. Without doing numerical calculations, predict the time of the second kettle (as a function of ), neglecting losses to the environment. Discuss what changes if the losses to the environment are not negligible.
Solution
Setup. Both kettles are connected to the same mains voltage . The power dissipated by Joule heating at fixed voltage is so halving the resistance doubles the power: .
Ideal case (negligible losses). The energy needed to heat the same litre of water by the same is the same: . The time is energy divided by power: The second, more powerful kettle takes half the time.
With non-negligible losses. While the water heats, some of the heat is dissipated to the environment at a rate that depends mainly on the temperature difference, not on the kettle’s power. The more powerful kettle heats faster, so it stays on for less time: there is less time for the heat to be lost, and the fraction of energy “wasted” to the environment is smaller. As a result the second kettle is somewhat more efficient and (the ratio remains, in any case, better for the more powerful model). In short: the “useful” fast-heating time wins out over the “wasted” time.

In parallelo.
Schema usato nelle case. Gli impianti domestici usano il parallelo. I motivi:
- ogni apparecchio riceve la stessa tensione nominale (), indipendentemente dagli altri;
- si può accendere e spegnere ciascun apparecchio senza influenzare gli altri;

Problem
Christmas lights connected in series: if one bulb blows, all the others go out. Explain why. What happens if they are in parallel? Which scheme is used in houses and why?
Solution
Why in series they all go out. In a series connection there is a single path for the current: the charge must pass through one bulb after another. If one blows, its filament breaks and the circuit becomes open: the current can no longer flow anywhere in the chain, so all the bulbs go out at the same time. (Many modern Christmas light strings add a small internal shunt that short-circuits the blown bulb precisely to avoid this.)
In parallel. Each bulb is an independent branch between the same two supply conductors, and sees the same voltage. If one blows, its branch opens but the others remain closed: the other bulbs keep working normally.
Scheme used in houses. Domestic wiring uses the parallel scheme. The reasons:
- each appliance receives the same rated voltage (), independently of the others;
- you can switch on and off each appliance without affecting the others;
- the failure of one appliance does not cut off the whole house.

Vero o falso?
Soluzione
(a) VERA.

Problem
True or false? (a) In a purely resistive circuit the current is in phase with the voltage. (b) In series the currents add up, in parallel the voltages add up. (c) The sum of the currents entering a node equals the sum of those leaving it. (d) The SI unit of resistance is the ohm. (e) The power dissipated in a resistor is .
Solution
(a) TRUE. In a pure resistor there is no phase shift between current and voltage: at every instant, so current and voltage reach their maxima and zeros at the same instants (they are in phase). A phase shift only appears with capacitors or inductors.
(b) FALSE. It is exactly the opposite: in series the current is the same in all elements and the voltages add up; in parallel the voltage is the same and the currents add up.
(c) TRUE. This is Kirchhoff’s first law (the node law), a consequence of charge conservation: charge does not accumulate at a node, so .
(d) TRUE. The SI unit of resistance is the ohm (), defined as .
(e) FALSE. The power dissipated is (a product, not a quotient), equivalent to . The form is dimensionally wrong.

Problem
A person switches on the stereo, two lamps and the hairdryer, all plugged into different sockets in the same room. Suddenly the trip switch trips. Explain what happened in terms of total current and protection of the wiring.
Solution
All the sockets in a room are fed by the same line at the mains voltage : the appliances are therefore effectively connected in parallel, all subjected to the same voltage.
In a parallel connection the currents add up: the line carries the sum of the currents drawn by the individual appliances. Each draws , so the total current is
The hairdryer dominates: with it alone draws . Adding the stereo () and two lamps ( each) exceeds the threshold of the circuit breaker protecting the line (typically ).
When the total current exceeds that threshold value, the protection trips, opening the circuit: this prevents the wiring, carrying excessive current, from overheating through Joule heating () until the insulation melts and starts a fire.
In short: switching on several appliances in parallel does not divide the current but adds it up; once the capacity of the wiring is exceeded, the protection intervenes. The practical solution is to spread high-power loads across different lines or not to use them simultaneously.

Problem
Explain in five lines the analogy between electric current in a wire and the flow of water in a pipe. At which point in the wire is the current “highest” in a series circuit? What do voltage, resistance and power represent in the hydraulic analogy?
Solution
The hydraulic analogy — the electric current is the amount of charge crossing a cross-section of the wire per unit time, exactly as the flow rate of water is the volume crossing a cross-section of the pipe per second:
Electrons act as “water”, the wire as “pipe”. The pump that pushes the water corresponds to the battery.
Where is the current highest in series? — In a series circuit the current is the same at every point: there is no point where it is higher. It is the hydraulic equivalent of a single pipe with no branches: the same water that enters at one end leaves at the other, the flow rate is identical at every cross-section. Charge neither accumulates nor disappears (conservation of charge).
Correspondences:
- Voltage pressure difference (or height difference) supplied by the pump: it is what drives the flow.
- Resistance constriction of the pipe (narrow cross-section, long or rough pipe): it hinders the flow for a given driving force.
- Power energy delivered by the flow per unit time, for example the water that turns a mill; in the wire is the energy dissipated or delivered per second.

Soluzione

Configurazione parallelo — ogni lampadina è sottoposta all’intera tensione :
Rapporto:

(a) The two bulbs in series; (b) in parallel on the same battery.
Solution
Series configuration — the resistances add up, , so the current is The power on one bulb (the same current flows through it):
Parallel configuration — each bulb is subjected to the full voltage :
Ratio:
Why they shine more brightly in parallel — in series the two bulbs share the voltage ( each) and the current is halved; in parallel each receives the full voltage .

Problem
Explain in five lines what happens when a short circuit is created across the poles of a battery, and why it is dangerous even for small domestic circuits. Consider the power dissipated, the internal resistance and the effects on the materials.
Solution
What happens — a short circuit connects the two poles of the battery with an external resistance that is almost zero (). The only resistance left to limit the current is the battery’s internal resistance (and that of the wires), typically very small:
With of the order of fractions of an ohm, this current is enormous compared with normal operation.
Power dissipated — all the power finds no useful load and is dissipated inside the battery and in the conductors of the short, through Joule heating:
Effects on materials — this concentrated power causes rapid heating: the wires can melt the insulation, the battery can overheat, swell, leak electrolyte or (in lithium batteries) go into thermal runaway with a risk of fire or explosion.
Why it is dangerous even on a small scale — what matters is not the voltage, which can be modest (, ), but the current: a small battery with low internal resistance can deliver tens of amperes when shorted, enough to heat a thin wire red-hot. This is why fuses and circuit breakers exist.

Soluzione
Autonomia e rendimento migliorerebbero sensibilmente.

Problem
Imagine that at C copper wires became superconductors (zero resistance). Discuss in five lines the impact on: (a) long-distance electrical power transmission; (b) consumer electronics and heat dissipation; (c) batteries and electric cars.
Solution
With in the wires, the power dissipated in the conductors vanishes: Joule heating disappears everywhere there is only copper. The consequences:
(a) Long-distance transmission — today, lines lose energy through Joule heating (on the order of ), which is why transmission occurs at very high voltage (to reduce and hence ). With superconducting wires, line losses vanish: energy could be transmitted at low voltage over any distance without waste, eliminating many transformer substations. A revolution for power grids.
(b) Consumer electronics — copper tracks and cables would no longer heat up, but the active components (transistors, chips, LEDs) and resistors dissipate for their own reasons, and would not disappear: the heat from processors would remain. The main gain would be in power connections (power supplies, distribution), less so in logic. Heating resistors (made specifically to dissipate) would no longer work if made of copper.
(c) Batteries and electric cars — copper cables and motor windings would not dissipate: more efficient motors, less heat to remove, charging at high currents without overheating the cables. However, the battery’s internal resistance (of chemical origin) would remain, as would the losses in windings that are already limited. Range and efficiency would improve significantly.

Conductor dimensions — the cross-section of the wire is dictated by the current (so it does not overheat). With ten times less current, much thinner conductors can be used (less copper, less weight, less material cost).
Electrical insulation — depends on the voltage, not on the current. At much thicker insulation would be needed, along with greater air gaps to avoid discharges and electrical arcs: sockets, plugs and household appliances would have to be completely redesigned and would become bulkier.
Safety for people — this is the critical point: is extremely dangerous. Such a high voltage easily overcomes the resistance of the skin, causes lethal currents through the body and can trigger arcs even without direct contact. The low-voltage domestic mains exists precisely as a compromise in favour of safety.

Problem
Explain in five lines why a fuse (a thin wire of a low-melting-point alloy) “blows” when the current exceeds a threshold value, protecting the rest of the circuit. Discuss the dependence of the power dissipated on the current and the thermal equilibrium of the wire with its surroundings.
Solution
Joule heating in the wire — the fuse wire has a small resistance ; carrying a current , it dissipates power which depends on the square of the current: doubling quadruples the power dissipated.
Thermal equilibrium — this heat produced warms the wire, which in turn transfers heat to the surroundings (by conduction, convection, radiation) at a rate that grows with its temperature. The wire reaches an equilibrium temperature when the heat produced by Joule heating equals the heat lost:
Why it “blows” — as long as stays below the threshold, equilibrium is established at a low temperature and the wire holds. If exceeds the threshold value, the term grows faster than the heat loss: the temperature rises until it reaches the melting point (low by design). The wire melts, the circuit opens and the current is interrupted, saving the appliances downstream.
The thinness of the wire (small cross-section high and little mass to heat) and the low-melting alloy are chosen specifically so that the fuse reacts before, and at a lower current, than the conductors it is meant to protect.

Rispondi in cinque righe.
Soluzione

Problem
A coil of thin wire (high resistance) heats up more than a thick wire (low resistance), even though it carries the same current. Why? And why are mains power cables “thick”, while those of a toaster are thin? Answer in five lines.
Solution
Why the thin wire heats up more — for the same current, the power dissipated through Joule heating is So, for fixed , whoever has the greater resistance heats up more. Resistance depends on geometry through the second law of Ohm: A thin wire (small cross-section ) and long (large ) has a high ; a thick wire has a large and hence a small . With the same current, the thin wire dissipates far more and heats up.
Mains power cables (thick) — they must carry current without heating up or wasting energy: a small is desired, hence a large cross-section. The power dissipated is pure waste (and a hazard), to be minimised.
Toaster wire (thin) — here heat is the purpose: the high resistance of the thin wire (in a high-resistivity alloy) is intentional, because it is precisely that produces the heat that toasts the bread.
Same physics, opposite goals: minimise to transport, maximise it to heat.

Problem
In a Wheatstone bridge the known arms are , , . The galvanometer between the intermediate nodes measures zero current when takes a certain value. Determine and recall why this method is particularly accurate.
Wheatstone bridge: is zero when the arms are balanced.
Solution
Balance condition — the galvanometer measures zero current when the two intermediate nodes (to the left and right of ) are at the same potential. This happens when the two voltage dividers — – on one side, – on the other — divide the voltage in the same proportion:
Solving for :
Why it is accurate — this is a null method: no value is read off a graduated scale (subject to calibration errors of the instrument); instead, the condition where the current in the galvanometer is exactly zero is sought. Under that condition, the result depends only on the ratios between known resistances, not on the sensitivity or linearity of the galvanometer nor on the precise value of the e.m.f. . It is enough for the galvanometer to be sensitive enough to detect zero; the uncertainty shifts entirely onto the reference resistors, which can be made very accurate.

Soluzione

Problem
Three identical light bulbs are connected in series to a battery. One of them burns out (infinite resistance). What happens to the other two? And what is the voltage measurable across the burnt-out bulb?
Three bulbs in series: burns out (broken filament).
Solution
What happens to the other two — in a series circuit the current has a single path. If a bulb burns out, its filament breaks and presents infinite resistance: the circuit is open. The current drops to zero everywhere:
So the other two bulbs go out as well: all three stay off. This is the well-known fault of old series light strings, where a single blown bulb switched off the entire string.
Voltage across the burnt-out bulb — with zero current, the two still-intact bulbs have no voltage drop across them (). Going around the loop, the entire e.m.f. of the battery therefore appears entirely across the break, i.e. across the burnt-out bulb:
A voltmeter placed across it reads the full battery voltage: this is the practical way to identify which bulb has blown.

Problem
Imagine copper had resistivity at room temperature. What would happen to: (a) a circuit with a bulb and a battery; (b) an electric convector heater; (c) the coils of a motor? Discuss in five lines for each case.
Solution
With the copper connecting wires would have resistance : no voltage drop and no heat along the cables. But only copper becomes ideal; components made of other materials keep their resistance.
(a) Circuit with a bulb and a battery — the bulb’s filament is made of tungsten, not copper: it keeps its resistance. The bulb still works, indeed better, because no voltage is lost across the copper wires any more: the full e.m.f. reaches its terminals and it shines at maximum. Careful though: if the copper wires directly closed the battery circuit (without the bulb), we would have a perfect short circuit, with current limited only by the battery’s internal resistance.
(b) Electric convector heater — it works precisely thanks to the resistance of its heating element (a high-resistivity alloy) which dissipates . If the element were made of copper with , it would have no resistance and would produce no heat: the convector heater would no longer heat up. Made instead of resistive alloy, it would keep working, while the copper supply cables would waste no energy.
(c) Motor coils — the windings are made of copper: with the Joule losses in the windings would disappear, making the motor almost perfect from a resistive standpoint (only magnetic and mechanical losses would remain). The flip side: at start-up, with no resistance to limit the current, there would be enormous inrush currents, hard to manage for the power supply (the inductance would still limit rapid changes, though).

Problem
Explain in five lines why, even without external use, a chemical battery discharges over time, and why a “flat” battery sometimes briefly recovers if left to rest. Discuss the role of self-discharge currents and ionic diffusion in the electrolyte.
Solution
Why it discharges on its own (self-discharge) — even at open circuit, slow parasitic chemical reactions occur inside the battery: small internal self-discharge currents make the active electrode materials react without delivering any useful energy externally. The separation between the reactants is never perfect, there are impurities and microscopic conductive paths in the electrolyte: the stored charge is consumed internally. This is why a battery left in a drawer for months is found partially discharged.
Why it “recovers” after resting — during use, the reaction consumes the reactants near the electrode surfaces faster than ionic diffusion can resupply them from the rest of the electrolyte. A concentration polarisation builds up: ions are locally depleted, the terminal voltage collapses and the battery appears flat. Leaving it to rest, diffusion has time to re-equilibrate the concentrations, bringing fresh reactants back to the surfaces: the voltage rises again and the battery delivers current for a while longer. This is only an apparent recovery, due to ion transport, not a real recharge: the total available charge is still decreasing.

Soluzione

Problem
A battery has EMF . At no load its terminals measure ; when powering a load the terminal voltage drops to . Calculate the internal resistance of the battery and comment on its state of use.

Solution
Real battery model — a real battery is modelled as an ideal e.m.f. in series with an internal resistance . When it delivers current, part of the e.m.f. is lost across and less remains at the terminals:
Current in the load — with and terminal voltage :
Internal resistance — the drop occurs entirely across :
Comment on the state of use — an internal resistance of is high for an AA battery (a new battery has of a fraction of an ohm). This explains why even at no load the terminals measure (the real voltmeter draws a small current) and why under load the voltage collapses to . The battery is therefore worn/nearly exhausted: it holds up at no load but “gives way” as soon as current is demanded from it.
